Support our striking university workers This month, workers at both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University have been forced to take strike action by their institutions.

Nobody wants to strike. But the mismanagement of both of Sheffield's universities has forced people's hands.

Both universities are forcing through job cuts while continuing with a failed management model that places buildings above people.

The strikes must win.

Evil is the only word I have that can sum up today's announcements.

This is a gift to the far right - creating infrastructure to facilitate mass deportation, legitimising racism and state violence.

Everyone involved in this, from Starmer to McSweeney to Mahmood, needs to go.

Labour’s latest attack on asylum seekers is cruel & counterproductive. How does it help community cohesion to hold threat of deportation over vulnerable people? We don’t need an arms race with the hard right over asylum, we need safe routes & European cooperation #bbclaurak

People granted asylum in the UK will only be allowed to stay in the country temporarily, in a major change of policy to be announced by the home secretary on Monday.
Shabana Mahmood is expected to declare that the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, as she seeks to reduce asylum claims and small boat crossings.
Under the plans, those granted asylum will be returned to their home country when it is deemed safe and their status will be regularly reviewed.
Currently, refugee status in the UK lasts for five years, after which they can apply for indefinite leave to remain and have a route to citizenship.

This is disgusting. It means people granted asylum will constantly be living with uncertainty, never feeling able to rebuild their lives. On a practical level, it also surely means more work and money, if claims are constantly being reassessed. A repugnant idea.

Yesterday we were told that any moves against Starmer would make the bond markets lose confidence in the government.

Today borrowing costs have risen because Rachel Reeves' tax u-turn has spooked the markets.

Make decisions based on principle, not in relation to fiscal boogeymen.

A Hundred Zohrans Zohran Mamdani’s historic victory shows how socialist figures committed to a local radicalism can shift debate and win big. The British left can build a hundred figures like him β€” here’s how.

"Local government is where socialist politics can make an immediate difference to our communities. Now is the time to get involved."

Labour Councillor @mineshparekh.bsky.social for Tribune on how Mamdani's win can inspire the Left.

Because as important as it is for remembrance to be about honouring the memory of those we lost, it is also about action.

Remembrance is about building the world they fought and died for.

A world free from fascism and a world free from war.

Today of all days, all politicians must ask how they can build a safer and fairer world.

I hope they remember that those soldiers who came back from WWII, created our NHS, established human rights frameworks, and the United Nations Charter, to 'save succeeding generations from the scourge of war'

True remembrance lies in the actions we take to prevent all further wars.

With this global push towards rearmament, with relentless profits for arms companies, it's hard to feel any lessons have been learnt from those two awful wars.

It is only through peacemaking we can honour their sacrifice.

Many in S10 and across our city are without water due to a burst water main.

This - and our hosepipe ban - are because Yorkshire Water fail to maintain our infrastructure.

Last year they:
❌ Lost 95 billion litres to leaks
❌ Dumped sewage 68,000+ times

There wouldn't be repeated protests if the government would stop arming Israel, end diplomatic and trade links, and apply all possible pressure to make the genocide stop.

Sheffield councillor speaks out about racism directed at him and colleagues on social media A Sheffield councillor says that there has been a recent β€œsharp rise” in online racist comments directed to himself and colleagues.

Really important interview with @mineshparekh.bsky.social by local democracy reporter Julia Armstrong in The Star.

The Facebook comments on @thestar.co.uk and Sheffield Online are an absolute cesspit of racism and hatred.

They either need to police them much better or else shut them down for good.

Over 30 emergency motions on Gaza have been tabled at Labour Party Conference #Lab25.

That is the highest number ever to be tabled in our party's history.

We must end arms sales and diplomatic links, and use every available lever to force the genocide to end.

When has immigration been ignored? It has been a constant over the last decade, from "Controls on Immigration" mugs to "island of strangers".

This isn’t β€˜a choice between decency and division’. This is playing into division.

The party of Keir Hardy and Clem Attlee deserves better.

Keir Starmer to launch progressive fightback against β€˜decline and division’ fuelled by far right Prime minister expected to warn UK is β€˜at a crossroads’ as he sets out plan to counter Nigel Farage and Reform

You can't have a "progressive fightback" without countering anti-migrant hate.

Anti-immigration legislation and rhetoric legitimises racism and emboldens the far-right.

The government must scrap its Border Security, Immigration and Asylum Bill.

Keir Starmer's Director of Strategy Paul Ovenden has resigned over some awful misogynistic comments.

Peter Mandelson was sacked far too late, and it appears the Prime Minister had full knowledge of his links to Epstein when appointed.

The culture in No 10 is rotten. Root and branch change needed.

Two men raped a Sikh woman and told her to 'get out' of this country.

This is what happens when racism is legitimised by our politicians and press. Demonisation leads to dehumanisation, normalising racist sexual violence.

We must move back away from the language of "island of strangers".

With a 2% levy this could have again raised Β£692,000, for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council.

How a levy on Premier League transfers could save cash-strapped councils The chancellor should consider introducing a 2% levy on Premier League player transfers over Β£10 million to help rebuild our economy.

As the Autumn Budget approaches, it's time to consider a range of methods to tax wealth.

A 2% levy on Premier League transfer fees could generate millions to support local authorities.
