Very sad to hear of Carolβs death - as a Law PhD student, I was involved in the Connecting Research on Employment & Work group, which she chaired. She had a great commitment to bring people across disciplines to research into work and always encouraged the students in the group to get involved.

βi am running into a new yearβ by Lucille Clifton
i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises and
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen and
twenty-six and thirty-six
even thirty-six but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me
Lucille Clifton, always.

Today is the Observerβs 233rd birthday. And the first of 4 strike days. I grew up in South Wales in the shadow of the minersβ strike. Extraordinary to be joining a picket line outside what I believed was my liberal progressive news org all these years later.
Weβre so grateful for your support & β
