Four people in a recording studio, with two at a mixing console and others seated. Monitors display audio tracks. Cozy atmosphere.
A music studio with four men; one plays guitar, another works on a computer, and two discuss. Equipment and snacks are scattered around.
On Wednesday the 15th, producer Biff Roxby and I put together an ambitious plan: record all the core band parts in just four days. And Iโm very happy to sayโฆ we absolutely smashed it

Some snaps taken by Joe Mansfield during our first four days of recording in Manchester, 16thโ19th October. We spent the days at WR Audio and set up camp in Irlam โ complete with a few rounds of cards in between sessions
23.11.2025 06:01 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The song Iโm playing here is โBenevolent Hypocriteโ โ the track we chose to kick off these sessions. I wrote it between 2010โ2012, so itโs one of the older pieces in this batch. Iโve played for years, sometimes as an alternate opener when rooms are quietโฆ so it felt like the right one to begin with

Had a super productive day setting up and making preparations. It feels great to be creating again โ and to be back in my native Manchester for a few days too.
Also, a kid on a bike in Irlam told me I look French. ๐ซ๐ท Iโll take it.

Itโs been almost a decade since I last set foot in a recording studio โ but Iโm delighted to say that Iโve reunited with my long-time producer and very good friend Biff Roxby at WR Audio to finally start making some new music! ๐ถ

Hereโs a mellow moment from the outro of "Apples of the Earth" ๐๐ถ
Guitar (in DADDAE tuning) and double bass (Bill Frampton) winding down in harmony, finding a calm flow together. With a fun slide at the end! ๐
This was the very first time Bill Frampton (double bass) and I played it together.
Iโm on acoustic guitar in DADDAE tuning โ hereโs the instrumental intro as it begins to grow
First rehearsal, first take ๐๐ต
Where new roots begin...
Our first run-through of "Apples of the Earth" โ literally โpotatoโ in French (plus Dutch and German)! ๐ฅ
Iโm on guitar (in BEBEBE tuning โ yes, really!), with Joe Mansfield on strings and Kai Carter on clarinet.
The songโs all about renewal and river restoration โ this is where it begins to lift
From verse into chorus โ a moment where River Revived finds its flow ๐๐ถ
Every note another ripple of life returning to our depleted rivers
From darkness into light โ๏ธ๐ถ
Rehearsing "Michael OโBrien", the final movement of my "Manchester Martyrs Medley".
Mandolin (me), fiddle (Joe Mansfield), and guitar (Kai Carter) shifting from the darker tones of E minor into the warmth of G major โ closing the medley on a more hopeful note ๐ปโ๏ธ
Rehearsing "Michael Larkin", the middle movement of my three-part "Manchester Martyrs Medley"
Mandolin (me), fiddle (Joe Mansfield) and guitar (Kai Carter) exploring the darker tones of this Irish-inspired piece ๐ป๐ฎ๐ช๐ถ

From the sewers to the swing ๐๐ป
Part 2 of "The Jolly Tosher" brings a new feel โ same tune, different flavour. Rehearsed here with Kai Carter (guitar), Joe Mansfield (fiddle) and yours truly (mandolin) all weaving together
Victorian sewers meet Irish swing ๐๐
Hereโs a clip from an instrumental section of Part 1 of "The Jolly Tosher "โ a song I wrote, inspired by Victorian sewer hunters in London ๐๐ก
This melody carries a touch of Irish flavour, played on mandolin, guitar, & fiddle ๐ถ With Kai Carter and Joe Mansfield
Tradition reimagined ๐ฟ๐ถ
Our version of "Down in the Willow Garden" brings banjo, fiddle, and guitar together โ with a lyrical twist on the old balladโs dark story. Final few verses here.

Joe Mansfield and Kai Carter have worked some magic on strings and clarinet here. ๐ชโจ This is taken from the middle of the chorus, through to the end of that section, from a new song I wrote, "I Was Not Dwelling in Darkness". Captured during our rehearsal on Friday 26th September

Another clip from a guitar one here. Back into good ol' standard tuning and the key of C for one more brand new song. This one's called "I Was Not Dwelling in Darkness". Nice chilled one for your relaxing Sunday!
Rehearsed for the first time with Kai Carter and Joe Mansfield on Friday 19th
It's about the Derby lockout - an important event in the history of British trade unionism - and it's called "Hands That Weave the Silk". Here's the ending, wonderfully embellished by Kai's gloom stick
