The fuzzy, yellow outline of a spiral shape. It glows more strongly towards the bottom right of the spiral, and close to the centre of the spiral, on it's right hand side, is a particular spot of light that has been circled in white to highlight it. This is the possible location of a new exoplanet candidate. The very centre of this spiral is completely black, having been removed by the instrument that took this picture.

Against a backdrop of complete darkness, two glowing spots of light can be seen in the middle of this image. At the very centre, a bright orange point of light is surrounded by three rings of orange material, which vary in thickness as they get further from the central point. Below these glowing rings, and slightly to the right, is a faint orange smudge that has been circled in white to highlight its presence. This is the possible companion found around the central star.

A bright, fiery, orange-yellow star with swooping magnetic field lines, releasing an intense flare of light into space. To the right of the star, there is a small red planet touching one of the star's magnetic field lines. The flare is blasting in the direction of the planet. A haze of gas around the planet seems to be being pushed out into space. The background is filled with stars, giving the impression of deep space.

🆕For the first time, astronomers using our Cheops mission have caught a planet triggering flares of radiation from the star it orbits 🪐💥

These tremendous explosions are blasting away the planet’s wispy atmosphere, causing it to shrink every year.

An image of a nearby star and its vicinity. The star itself has been blocked out and its bright light has been removed. A dashed circle with a star symbol at the centre of the image marks the star’s location. A fuzzy blue disc surrounds the star. An orange spot, near to the star and inside this disc, is identified as a planet orbiting the star. A fainter orange spot far from the centre marks a distant star.

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has found evidence of a cold, Saturn-mass planet around the star TWA 7, seemingly sculpting its disc of debris!

If confirmed, this would be Webb’s first direct image discovery of a planet.
