'A powerful saga that draws the reader into the darkest chambers of Irish mythology, full of inventiveness and vigour.'
A gorgeous review of SISTER WAKE in @meathchronicle.bsky.social today!
Thank you Colm and @dublinsouthfm.bsky.social for this lovely interview about books, process, and even a short reading from SISTER WAKE!

It's turning into kind of a busy week!
I am delighted to share the cover of DARKISLE II: NELL ON EARTH, illustrated by the gorgeous @aeadraws.bsky.social, out this World Book Day!
If you liked CONN OF THE DEAD, this has;
- even more jokes
- a new scrappy hero
- a ravenous, T-Rex-sized otter
It's amazing what starting meds has done for a) my productivity as a writer and b) my ability to not go looking for novelty every 34 minutes!
22.01.2026 10:03 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0You're not far off - I based it on Carlingford! The bay, the history, and the distance were all incredibly helpful in the design process. Definitely far enough - you'll hear her coming at least...
21.01.2026 11:54 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Absolutely - biting your tongue or disparaging yourself so you can pass with a minimum of conflict. A friend of Native American descent told me once about her mam (I think) being advised to just tell people she was Italian instead, as it would be safer and easier. Horrible, but very common I think.
21.01.2026 11:52 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The only thing I will say is that the cheapest place to get hobby bits is NOT a GW shop - arts and crafts and hardware shops all have the exact same tools and they're much cheaper.
This is an excellent video on what you might need starting out, happy painting!

There are moments of frustration with it, like any hobby, but honestly as long as you're in it for the experience and not to become 'amazing' at it (that will come with time) it's wonderful.
If you go into a GW shops, they'll give you a model to build, you can see if you enjoy the process!
... it was also the gift that kept on giving, in terms of solidity and granular history to go on, from lifting plovers out of Howth Bay to sphagnum moss in Mayo. I'm very grateful it worked for you!
19.01.2026 17:14 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is so so lovely to hear! I am definitely obsessed with selling the fantastical as plausible - the gods have to have elbow wrinkles and armpit hair, or they're not weighty enough! And I'm so glad the locations felt true to you - I was nervous about leaning on Ireland so heavily, but...
19.01.2026 17:14 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0She was totally using it as a passport for her own terrible opinions, and my guess is this person, if they existed, probably had to internalise quite a lot of colonial language in order to pass under the radar (it's so common - what's the alternative, making your whole life a battleground?)
19.01.2026 17:10 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thank you so much sir! It was lovely to see Daire at the launch, and haha how magnanimous of him, such generosity of spirit!
19.01.2026 16:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Holy crap thank YOU!
I'm sorry I missed your last tweet, this weekend has been such a chaotic mess post-launch. So delighted you liked it, it's new enough that relatively few ppl have actually read the ending so I'm so curious as to your thoughts now that you're out the other side!
@daveruddenwrites.bsky.social I've just finished Sister Wake. Good lord. It's incredible. I need a day to gather my thoughts. Thank you for writing this.
19.01.2026 16:07 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I could have filled a book with the absolutely WILD THINGS that author said to me, including but not limited to;
'I have an Indian friend, very well-educated, who says India was a real mess before we went over.'
When she said that, the young woman across from us nearly bit through her fork.
Did you make yourself a little resolution to get out more this year? How about coming down to Grafton St and supporting a local artist, writer @daveruddenwrites.bsky.social today - itโs free, there may be wine, and everybody is really welcome #SisterWake

Just two days left until SISTER WAKE is released!
If you happen to be in Dublin this Thursday, come to the launch!
If you're not, but you're craving an epic fantasy with;
- anti-colonial themes
- giant monsters with tragic hearts
- Irish myth and history
Then this might be the book for you...
This was a lovely chat with the fantastic @eithneshortall.bsky.social about all things SISTER WAKE, Sam, and a dinner party argument about why, no, colonialism was not a 'mixed bag...'

07.01.2026 10:40 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0You absolute hero - my editions are all these and I love them to pieces, hunted down each one in second hand book shops over about ten years as a broke teenager, they will always be the quintessential Pratchett cover to me
07.01.2026 10:39 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0You know it's a good literary event when you and the audience end up singing Stacy's Mom at karaoke in a pub called the Banshee Labyrinth.
07.01.2026 10:37 โ ๐ 17 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Friends in Clare/Limerick, I've been offered a job working between Ennis & Shannon.
I'm looking for somewhere to live, I'll be hoping my 15yo can join me over summer, but I could rent a room til then. If anyone has any accommodation leads please give me a shout.
Shares appreciated ๐

Preorders are important because then you forget you preordered and you buy another copy of the book and give the one you get after the one you get surprisingly quickly to your friend.
05.01.2026 00:23 โ ๐ 22 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1Off to #Edinburgh for my annual week-long fantasy writing course with Rutgers students AND my first Sister Wake event AND also to go to the bar where they lower a nine-foot Frankenstein from the ceiling at 4pm every day, all equally and extremely educational
05.01.2026 07:27 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I don't I'm afraid, US publishing is a bit fraught at the minute, but hopefully soon physically, and potentially you can get it digitally - I'm not 100% sure!
