You're not far off - I based it on Carlingford! The bay, the history, and the distance were all incredibly helpful in the design process. Definitely far enough - you'll hear her coming at least...

Absolutely - biting your tongue or disparaging yourself so you can pass with a minimum of conflict. A friend of Native American descent told me once about her mam (I think) being advised to just tell people she was Italian instead, as it would be safer and easier. Horrible, but very common I think.

The only thing I will say is that the cheapest place to get hobby bits is NOT a GW shop - arts and crafts and hardware shops all have the exact same tools and they're much cheaper.

There are moments of frustration with it, like any hobby, but honestly as long as you're in it for the experience and not to become 'amazing' at it (that will come with time) it's wonderful.

If you go into a GW shops, they'll give you a model to build, you can see if you enjoy the process!

This is so so lovely to hear! I am definitely obsessed with selling the fantastical as plausible - the gods have to have elbow wrinkles and armpit hair, or they're not weighty enough! And I'm so glad the locations felt true to you - I was nervous about leaning on Ireland so heavily, but...

She was totally using it as a passport for her own terrible opinions, and my guess is this person, if they existed, probably had to internalise quite a lot of colonial language in order to pass under the radar (it's so common - what's the alternative, making your whole life a battleground?)

You absolute hero - my editions are all these and I love them to pieces, hunted down each one in second hand book shops over about ten years as a broke teenager, they will always be the quintessential Pratchett cover to me

Preorders are important because then you forget you preordered and you buy another copy of the book and give the one you get after the one you get surprisingly quickly to your friend.

Off to #Edinburgh for my annual week-long fantasy writing course with Rutgers students AND my first Sister Wake event AND also to go to the bar where they lower a nine-foot Frankenstein from the ceiling at 4pm every day, all equally and extremely educational

I don't I'm afraid, US publishing is a bit fraught at the minute, but hopefully soon physically, and potentially you can get it digitally - I'm not 100% sure!
