Hard to overstate how bad this is.
South Africa gets 80% of its electricity from coal.
If they do manage to build enough renewable capacity for this, then why not the rest of the country?
Also, Durban may be wet, but as a country SA is rushing toward Day 0 water.
Etc
Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM
Really seems like someone should be charged with a crime here
guys I am starting to suspect that not everyone currently in a position of power in this country is *entirely* qualified for their job
Mind you these workers are specifically Kenyan workers who are made to view and annotate the absolute worst things created by man and machine for extremely low pay and absolutely no support or care from Meta for the trauma they endure every day at work
While washing dishes & hanging laundry this weekend, I listened to this convo on book publicity btw @draftingthepast.bsky.social & @sonyabonczek.bsky.social. Great Qs & great As!
#skystorians, if your book's coming out in the near future, take a listen!

THIS IS THE WAY.

Interesting.
""What we're seeing is a gradual shift in blood chemistry that mirrors the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide which is driving climate change," A/Prof Larcombe said."
I keep reminding people that admins hate English departments because they are popular (read: inefficient), not because they aren’t. AI is in a long line of technologies that promise to solve that problem for them.
THIS. My university didn’t even release the report—they just quietly ended the committee when they realized. I only know because a friend was on it!
Nothing gives me more energy than basking in the work of the REAL ONES who are staying focused on fossil fuels and climate
extremely glorious news on that front: @emorwee.bsky.social is teaming up w/ former CBS climate journo Tracy Wholf for a new video podcast -->>>
Kansas just invalidated the drivers licenses of every trans person in the state. They’re being told to surrender their current licenses and get new ones listing their birth sex. No grace period. Get caught driving with your now-invalid license and you’re looking at jail and a fine.
Climate denial is expensive!
The American Academy of Actuaries warns that closing the National Center for Atmospheric Research — which the Trump regime calls “one of the largest sources of climate alarmism" — would lead to higher prices for home insurance and thus for housing itself.
True but we can get a long way on this if we throw the private prison CEOs in the slammer and fine them into poverty.
We can offer the workers jobs in a WPA-like program too.
These are “low enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.
