signing up for letterboxd pro was worth it if only for the fact that letterboxd now sends me an email when something in my watchlist shows up on kanopy, where i can watch it with nothing more than my library card

Syndicates of Capital States are no longer the highest form of power globally. Power has shifted to wealthy individuals who work in groups and operate across borders.

"Neoliberal hegemony catalyzed the shift of how world power is organized, facilitating the fall of an anarchic system of states, and the rise of syndicates of capital. Liberalism effectuated a new world order in which liberalism is obsolete."

excellent explainer on who runs the world now, and why

i talk to the kids about this all the time. everyone they know is anxious and depressed and it’s hard for them to wrap their heads around how anomalous that is historically, how an environment can be built for the purpose of perpetuating feelings of never-ending desire, how the struggle is the point

a poisoned food supply, attention extraction and the enclosure of the human psyche, toxic individualism, the lack of third places, consumer culture, healthcare that can bankrupt you, the ever-present threat of homelessness, patriarchy/fascism/sexism

the system works better when you’re miserable

i’ve been fascinated lately with the emergence of a particular type of therapist who specializes in treating the anxiety caused by living in a late capitalist hellscape

we weren’t meant to live like this

second quarter was legit some of the worst basketball i've ever seen. no ball movement and atrocious three-point shooting but instead of getting it inside to get some rhythm you just... keep shooting. no one running any offense, just shoot the three and hope for the best

dunno wtf atkinson is doing

Moral Mysteries | The Point Magazine “It is always a significant question to ask about any philosopher: what is he afraid of?” wrote Iris Murdoch in her slim work of moral […]

"If we have a moral philosophy that moves us away from some abstract capacity to make logical sense of the world and toward imagining the other through personal narrative, are we not saved—at least a little bit—from our loneliness?" ($)

Background is not the shy, retiring, you-go-first word it seems to want to be

"We are lonely today, not because we are losing contact with other individuals, but because we have lost our friendship with the sky and the moon and the stars that create the canopy beneath which all of our human relationships and friendships flourish and prosper in mutual awe."

I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.
Sahar Delijani, Iranian author

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.

I support neither imperialism or dictatorship.

Sahar Delijani said it best:

They spent billions on regime change in Venezuela and left the Maduro's head of torture in charge.

They are now spending billions on regime change in Iran, knowing the most likely outcome will be harder line leadership.

We do not have serious people running our country.

The public is also relying on leaders to tell them what is possible. Democrats giving up on defending trans people signals to the average person that trans rights are a lost cause; fighting for trans rights signals that it is both good and possible.

In the months ahead we will be talking a lot about this.

CNN + CBS will, I think, become the most heated site in the Orbánization of American media.

On day one of the new boss those still working at CNN should expect to be treated as biased — liberal bias, of course.

That's the signal: it's on.
