Four partially aligned with normative journalistic roles: 1️⃣ Information; 2️⃣ Interpretation; 3️⃣ Accountability; and 4️⃣ Activism.
And three that extend ✨ beyond ✨ traditional roles: 5️⃣ Emotional connection; 6️⃣ Interaction; and 7️⃣ Societal relevance.

On my way to Cardiff for FoJ and extra excited as I get to share that our new paper with @sandrabanjac.bsky.social and Folker Hanusch has just been published in @digitaljournalism.bsky.social!
Our study explored audience expectations of journalists, revealing seven dimensions:
10.09.2025 08:25 — 👍 1 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0
3️⃣ Strong emotions are reinforced through highly rewarding interactions with other community members, both online and offline, which deepen their sense of belonging and purpose and drive political mobilization and participation.
01.09.2025 09:49 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
2️⃣ These identities evoke strong emotions, from love for fellow supporters to fannish attachment to leaders and anger or fear toward out-groups.
01.09.2025 09:49 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
1️⃣ Supporters imagine themselves as part of “the people,” a community associated with overwhelmingly positive traits connected to identities such as the working class, the nation, and a perceived common-sense majority.
01.09.2025 09:49 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
Drawing on social identity theory and fan studies, I analyzed 33 in-depth interviews and 6,000 online exchanges among supporters of Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, Santiago Abascal, and Pablo Iglesias to explore how populist supporters identify with their idea of “the people.”
The findings show that:

Grateful for the feedback, conversations, support, and all the inspired whiteboard sketches that helped shape this piece @phoebemaares.bsky.social, @jonathanhendrickx.bsky.social & Folker Hanusch!

In it, we explore how journalistic actors, possessing different forms of knowledge about the communities they cover, ground their authority in three dimensions: 1️⃣proximity to news protagonists, 2️⃣authenticity as recognized by the community, and 3️⃣professionalism within the journalistic field.

New publication out in Journalism! Grateful to have worked on this with @dgarusi.bsky.social (leading the way!) & Folker Hanusch. Using Sartre’s concept of "the look," we explore how journalists’ physical presence & visibility shape their connection to local communities. #Openaccess 👇

Just out:✨open access✨ in Comm Theory! With @dgarusi.bsky.social & Folker Hanusch, we argue that phenomenological sociology offers a useful lens to understand trust in news as a situational decision to suspend uncertainty, shaped by the interplay of institutional, organizational & individual actors.

@ajbauer.bsky.social & @amnadler.bsky.social wrote an article in Journalism Studies arguing that the field should explore how right-wing media challenge journalistic authority.
Scholars, including myself, responded to their arguments & they replied to our critiques!

Our findings suggest a relationship between repeated exposure and stronger belief in these false stories, highlighting the importance of viewing disinformation as narratives to better understand how users repeatedly encounter, reshape, and share them in today's hybrid media system.
