So here I am, before breakfast, carrying weight for all those broken in Hurricane Melissa. How can I carry any weight at this distance? I can't explain it, but it can be done. You don't have to be moved to tears, though I long ago learned they're a gift. Be present to those in pain. DO what you can.

I keep considering waking up at four in the morning, but it's a little early for me. It might get me to bed by eleven, though, which would be a very good thing! We will see each other, though, in time. The most important thing is that the treatment is helping. Hallelujah!

I escaped Hurricane Melissa, catching a flight back to Toronto the day before they closed the airport. Surreal, being in touch with people all through a Category Five Hurricane. Beyond surreal, the damage done in the western section of the island where the landscape in places reminds one of Gaza.

Want to thank all the folks who followed me while I was nursing a new knee—a very badly behaved one—and finishing work on my second collection of stories, for which we chose a title today. TWO DAYS IN MAYARO is forthcoming from Goose Lane Editions in fall 2026. Superb working with Bethany Gibson!

Glorious Ash Wednesday. Northrop Frye, I think it was, who said one can't understand English literature without having read the Bible. True, but English words echo into all the great Holy Books. Going to do a last revision of my short story collection, GOAT MOUTH that @gooselane.bsky.social publishes in fall 2026. Using notes provided by my incredible friend, Jennifer Stevenson. Later I'll get marked on my forehead with ashes, though I need no reminder, after 7 deaths in the past 2 months.

My very dear friend, Timothy J Reiss, died a couple days ago. First Danielle Legros Georges, then Nalo's mum, Velma Pollard, now Tim. Threaded in between, my nephew and brother-in-law. A season of death, my daughter says. They all made this world better. I guess their reward is not being here now!

Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges.

This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.

Did not know Danielle Legros Georges well but feel privileged to have interacted with her as part of the Wheatley 250 project that she and Artress Bethany White created last year. Giving thanks for her life, creativity, contribution as an academic worker. Comfort and condolence to her dear ones. RIP
