I Married a Man I’d Known a Few Months
You have to take your time before you commit to someone. That was the advice I grew up with. I completely ignored it.

Why Is No One Having Sex?

Palantir's most recent scandal, covertly working with Topham Guerin to discredit the work of Good Law Project, is just the latest in a career littered with this kind of activity, beginning with the "Team Themis" scandal in 2011. They've been doing this for decades.

Who pays Reform's candidate?
What do they want for the money?
How is this in the interests of UK voters?
Why do our laws allow it?

Trans people are going to continue using the facilities that we feel comfortable in and living our lives of course. It just makes us vulnerable to attack, legal threats, makes us toxic in terms of employment when employers are told they have to protect our rights while also discriminating against us

Otherwise, the task of Leftists isn't to argue about LLMs are "good" or not. It is to understand what workers are fighting for, to understand how the glut of synthetic information is undermining democracy, and to mitigate the harms when the house of cards the economy has been built upon falls.

One small quibble I have with the newsletter is the statement "It’s entirely possible to imagine an 'AI' that was outside of corporate control."
I would just say, at that point we wouldn't call it 'AI'. 'AI' itself a marketing term, and a colonizing one at that.

As Brian puts it: "It fails to account for the fact that most of the dismissals of AI are not related to the technology, but AI’s political economy... Developed and sold by SV oligopolies, for the benefit of tech billionaires, with the intent of surveilling, deskilling, and eroding labor."

A good response to the AI ~discourse~ by @bcmerchant.bsky.social. A few choice top-line quotes:

The framing is on its face bad faith. Genocide is not and cannot be justified, even as a means of survival. If I'm given a choice of "die or commit genocide," then "commit genocide" is the WRONG ANSWER. Always. Under all circumstances. Full stop.
I will not concede any mass murder is justified.

Yesterday, those who teach Intro to Sociology at Florida colleges (as opposed to universities) received a ready-made curriculum from the state and were ordered to teach it.
Yes, you read that correctly. The *state* is enforcing a curriculum on college profs, complete w/ the following restrictions:

The European Commission should never have attended today's "Board of Peace" meeting in Washington, as it had not received the Council's mandate to do so.
Beyond the legitimate political questions raised by the "Board of Peace," the Commission must scrupulously respect European law and institutional balance in all circumstances.
Merci.

This is a great piece but to me it kinda elides the truly objectionable thing about THE BOMBER MAFIA: the point of Gladwell's story, the thing he is twisting the facts to argue for, is the idea (embodied by Curtis LeMay) that indiscriminate massacre of civilians in war is actively moral

ICE operations increasingly resemble Israeli occupation. That's no coincidence
U.S. immigration enforcement has long cultivated ties with Israel. Now it adapts algorithmic surveillance tactics from Gaza for use on American streets.
"ICE is following in Israel's footsteps: both ELITE and Mobile Fortify bear a striking resemblance to mobile targeting applications Israeli forces have integrated into their policing arsenal."

I've been saying it a lot, but these deaths line up with what happened in early concentration camps during other regimes: Deaths from poor conditions, disease, or abuse. These deaths are not accidental. They are the direct result of a camp system that is designed to harm those being imprisoned.

- Radicalization of young men (idle hands, etc)
- Transphobia (Sports parents hysterically worried Emily is gonna lose a volleyball scholly)
- Fraying communities

Imagine not being able to see a doctor. Imagine not having access to medicine. Imagine ambulances not able to reach you or your loved ones in an emergency. Now, imagine that the reason for that is entirely man-made, purposeful; for millions of Palestinians, this is their horrifying reality.
