Kohli's particular tragedy being of course that all of his hard work and discipline was so that, in his own words, he could play on like he was 28 well into his 30s. He retires from the ultimate form of the game at 36, younger than the norm.

It was such a privilege to watch him bat.

Time makes the heart grow fonder even for those we previously might not have cared much for. Each Big Retirement a reminder of our own ages and craving for familiarity and constants.

All we are left with are memories: of grit, discipline, elegance, poise and sheer force of will. And of Greatness.
