I exported every collection as a .ris file. This way, the imported records came along with their pdfs. But I had most pdfs locally on my computer so I don't know if the pdfs would be imported if you don't have them locally.

In the end what worked best was to export/import the collections one by one. It's a bit painful (I have so many of them!) but it's already worth it. Zotero is so much better. Thanks for the suggestion!

What a terrible loss!

Adrian, I'm just playing round with this at the moment, and haven't found a way to export from Papers that keeps collections intact upon import into Zoteo. Is there a way? (I've tried .bib .ris and .csv so far. Haven't yet tried to go via Mendeley intermediate).
