Something I like about Val is how he's meant to be a cunning evil bastard but is also extremely emotional.
The way I see it, he's stuck in cycles of highly reactive states.
And soothes his rage with sadism, because it allows him to "cope" in ways he's familiar with (sex/violence)

So when words don't work,
one has to choke the flame while it's still burning.
It's a lot harder to put out a fire that's gone cold.
