Conclusions:
Our findings illustrate how political identity shapes consumption.
After Musk’s endorsement of the AfD, buying a Tesla meant something different as before and this is reflected in consumption choices.

Other EV brands showed no comparable change, confirming the response was unique to Tesla and driven by Musk’s political endorsement rather than market-wide factors.
📈 Key finding:
Tesla registrations increased by up to 30% in regions with strong AfD support but declined where Green Party support was higher. This increase corresponds to roughly two additional cars per month in AfD-strong areas.
We use district-level vehicle registration data and an event study design to measure how Tesla sales evolved before and after Musk’s endorsement in German regions with different political ideologies.

🚗🇩🇪 What happens when CEOs express political ideology?
In our new paper, Sebastian and I investigate how Elon #Musk’s endorsement of Germany’s far-right #AfD in Dec 2024 polarized #Tesla sales across political lines.

What happened when the U.S. forcibly sent 400,000 Mexican workers back to Mexico in the 1930s?
The employment rate of native workers *went down* noticeably as a direct result. (You read that correctly)
Why?
Forced repatriation destroyed low-skill markets.

We analyze data on over 1,600 pastors -looking at their education and job histories- to map out social ties between cities.
Cities connected by a pastor were 46–63% more likely to have protests in a given week.
This highlights how local leaders and their networks can enable collective action.
How do social movements spread under authoritarian regimes?
We have a new short paper that examines the 1989 East German revolution. We show that networks of Protestant pastors which were key local leaders facilitated the spatial diffusion of protests.
