The other story that seems underplayed is the developing fertilzer crisis given how much urea is produced in the gulf and transported through the strait. US farmers were already in trouble thanks to tariffs, now they face a double barrel of dramatically higher fuel and fertilizer costs.

Anyone who uses “war fighter” unironically should be caned in public.

I remember 1973. This is going to be a lot worse. People aren’t prepared.

1. America is squandering its missile and ammo stocks, won’t be able to help Ukraine even if it wants to. 2. Rising energy prices and the coming economic recession will drive Europeans to seek accommodation w Russia and sanctions relief.

I have met so many Europeans and Middle Easterners who think Trump is just great. This is why I no longer think America is exceptional, there are actually millions of mean-spirited stupid people across the globe.

Even ignoring her MAGA shame, isn’t there an obvious reason why people in places like NI might be a wee bit more interested in American politics than Americans are in NI? She doesn’t see that?

The proximate cause of the February Revolution was the war and the economic hardship it caused. The Tsar is obviously to blame for that, but Russia between 1890-1913 had one of the fastest growing economies in the world. People were especially angry because the war has derailed that progress.

And yet I constantly meet Europeans who like Trump, especially in the business community. It’s not just „bad education“, people are busy with their lives. Trump and right wing populists are brilliant at appealing emotionally to people who don’t want to spend time thinking deeply about politics.

Shoot, I thought this was going to be the oral history of Sloan:

The Bolsheviks killed the Tsar and his family because they were afraid Monarchists would rally around him. You don’t need to kill a genuinely unpopular leader.

Bahrain hosts a US naval base, which is a legitimate military target. Bahrain also has a majority Shia population that Iran may hope can be encouraged to revolt against the Sunni elites that rule them.

Best way to practice is to have the German subtitles on. Most people can understand more of a written foreign language than a rapidly spoken and sometimes lazily enunciated dialogue. Using same language subtitles is a massive help with French.

We‘ve seen unfortunately that both the EU and Canada are behaving like abused spouses. They just refuse to accept America is no longer an ally no matter how hard they get kicked in the face. It may be sadly easier than you think to win them back with some kind words and smiles.

40% is insane in the sense that any action taken by a convicted felon, insurrectionist, racist, accused pedophile, grifter, suck up to America hating dictators and failed first term President should immediately be suspect. But here we are.

I agree with you, but in practical terms who is going to have the training and commitment to violence to hold these people accountable? My fear is that most supporters of liberal democracy will behave the way Europe behaves toward Russia. Lectures and shaming won’t work.

Back in the 1970s, when Iran was considered a U.S. ally, the U.S. was far less beholden to Israel, and we actually put US interests first in the Middle East. Israel has no interest in returning to that.

The BSA had no support from the U.S. military before WWII, and I honestly don’t recall any overt support in the 1970s. Let’s go back to the „good old days“.

No, if someone had shown me this map in 2021 I would have said clearly a victory for Russia and a disaster for Ukraine. Russia now controls most of what used to be Ukraine’s coast and its heavy industry. Let’s not kid ourselves. But Putin is too stupid to declare victory and walk away.

On the one hand our elites are constantly screaming about threats from China and Iran, while on the other hand also telling us not to learn anything about those cultures and their history. Makes sense.

And why do I have a weird feeling that Mexican history post 1519 wouldn’t count as “Western”?

Are Italy, Spain and France not “the West”? We are all still speaking a version of Latin in those countries. The Roman Catholic Church is literally the continuation of a Roman imperial institution. Maybe we should simply be excluding Anglo-Saxons from “the West” (but the Welsh can stay).

It could be the intelligence of NHL hockey players was skewed upwards by the number of non-Americans who play in the NHL.

I’m sure it’s tainted, but supposedly there was a study showing hockey players are on average the most intelligent of those four groups. Baseball players are the dumbest. Hockey players tend to be a little more worldly as well since the top ones play lots of tournaments outside the U.S. growing up.

He cares about three things:
1. Building monuments to himself
2. Helping Russia win the war against Ukraine
3. Tariffs.

In that order I think.

There is an argument for conflating points 2&3 as simply “using the Office of the Presidency to enrich himself at America’s expense”

That’s not even his worst policy. In terms of human civilian deaths caused by Trump policies, abolishing USAID is probably the worst, followed by supporting Russia against Ukraine.

As a New Englander I can see the upside. People in Slovenia and Croatia are mostly happy not to live in Yugoslavia anymore.

Trump is quite obviously incompetent, especially at managing the economy. Hitler was very good at bluffing, people really believed in the 1930s, and even into the 1960s (see the relevant Star Trek episode) that the Nazis had turned around a failing economy.

My English colonial ancestors were never particularly thrilled with having Catholics in this country, whether Irish or French Canadian. Some of them also went to war in the 1860s to kill Scots-Irish descendants in the Confederacy. Sherman is still my personal hero.
