BREAKING NEWS SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRANS MILITARY BAN On May 6th', the Supreme Court ruled to temporarily allow the Trump administration to enforce its transgender military ban, despite multiple legal challenges. TIMELINE • January - Trump signs executive order that allowed the Pentagon to enforce a transgender military ban. • February - Pete Hegseth issued a policy giving the military services 30 days to develop a plan for identifying and discharging transgender servicemembers. Seven transgender servicemembers and one transgender person quickly challenged the ban. • March - Multiple lower courts block the ban. The case before the Supreme Court came from a ruling by US district court judge Benjamin Settle. • April - Trump administration filed an emergency application to the Supreme Court, asking for intervention. • May 6th - Supreme Court rules ban to be upheld while legal challenges proceed. SCOTUS WEIGHS IN The ruling allows the ban to take effect even while challenges to the policy continue. There was no explanation for the decision, though that is common for emergency rulings. The three liberal justices did note their dissent. The biggest concern is this order will result in the immediate discharge of thousands of servicemembers, while legal proceedings could take months to resolve. There is hope, however, that the ban will ultimately be struck down in court, as several federal judges reviewing the cases have concluded that it violates the constitutional rights of transgender Americans. While there is no firm number on how many trans servicemembers there are, it likely accounts for less than 1% of those serving. This shows that the ban has nothing to do with military readiness and is a continuation of this administration's attacks on trans people's right to exist.
