Speaking with podcast legend @thejimharold.bsky.social about my book “Mind Over Magick: The Psychology of Ritual Magick” was a real treat. Since 2005 (😮), Jim’s acclaimed shows like “The Paranormal Podcast,” “Campfire Stories” and “The Other Side” have racked up over 80 million downloads. /1

A stylized blue and orange trxt block that reads:

What is Contemporary
Paganism, and where does it come from?
Is Paganism really an "earth-based religion"?
Do modern-day Druids, witches, Heathens, and occultists really belong under the same umbrella?
Is a "Neo-Pagan" up to something different from a
"polytheist"?
What do people working to reconstruct ancestral traditions have in common with people who are consciously creating new traditions?
Contemporary Paganism offers practitioners a vast array of cosmologies, personal practices, and models for community belonging. From the revival of ancient pre-Christian tradition to the adoption of futuristic utopianism inspired by science fiction, join Thorn Mooney in this new 8-week seminar that explores the immense and challenging landscape of contemporary Paganism.
Through case studies of individual traditions, historical accounts of prominent leaders and thinkers, close readings of influential texts, and the accounts of everyday practitioners on social media, we'll learn why contemporary Paganism appeals to so many people today and what its popularity might say about the changing religious landscape more broadly.

Shelley Lake is home to a nesting pair of bald eagles—Raleigh and Shelley—and we luckily saw one of them today. We watched them feeding their eaglet(s), but couldn’t see the babies.

Many of these terms mean different things to different people or contexts. What makes a religion “mainstream”? What is a “cult”? Is there a difference between them? Not all rituals are to “feel good about yourself.” Again, it depends on what you mean by ritual (I share a few definitions in my book).

The Power of Ritual & Symbols — When Science Finally Catches Up With Magick with Richard Kaczynski
YouTube video by Sandie Sedgbeer The Power of Ritual & Symbols — When Science Finally Catches Up With Magick with Richard Kaczynski

I had a delightful conversation with Sandie Sedgbeer (Beyond Realms and Reason) about my book “Mind over Magick: The Psychology of Ritual Magick,” which examines what peer-reviewed research on psychology tells us about why ritual is a powerful tool for transformation.

Season one episode eight Thelemic holidays with Maevius Lynn the eternal void, but with jazz podcast

That book we just talked about, Liber AL vel Legis, has a part that's very
fascinating, and it calls for humans—all of humanity-to celebrate certain holy days or holidays. And it calls for people to celebrate not only on the yearly cycle, but also moments of our life [...] One of the first questions people ask when they enter a new religion or a new tradition is
'What holidays y'all got?' Because, honestly, the points of time that someone celebrates really is a nice gateway into what the values of the tradition are, and I really feel like it's true in the case of Thelema.

I’m honored to get to tag along as the official “Assistant to Maevius Lynn.” This must be what it feels like to watch “Avengers: Endgame,” and as the credits roll you see yourself listed as “Assistant to Robert Downey Jr.” 🥰 /2

The proof copy of my upcoming book just arrived in the mail! It feels surreal! Wow!!

Here is a little sneak preview for you all as well. I absolutely love the little cakes of light illustration with circles and crosses.

I get it. I always used to listen to NPR when driving, but I’ve made the choice to play music instead, and it’s made a big difference. It’s not like I’m avoiding the news, I’m just creating space where I’m not continuously bombarded with it. Bonus: singalongs! Much ❤️ to you.

Not sure I understand your question, but I’m a social psychologist and statistician who is also an independent scholar of Western esotericism. This book pulls together peer-reviewed research that sheds light on what happens, psychologically, when people engage in spiritual practices.

A short video exploring an important and fascinating occult concept in Thelema. I believe this idea will help all magical practitioners do better magick (not just Thelemites!). #magick #occult #AleisterCrowley

Last night we streamed “The Name of the Rose” (which @maeviuslynn.bsky.social had not seen before) only to discover that Amazon’s version censors about 4 minues from the film, including a brief but significant scene. Wishing I had popped in the BluRay instead.
