A rip of thunder cracking through the air interrupted Ralph. The passengers of the bus gasped. Some flinched and crouched down in their seats. Jo, unaffected, looked out the window. The timing seemed about right. The clouds were that perfectly menacing shade of sage green. A serious storm lay ahead.
The sternness in her tone shocked even herself; she sounded like their mother. “Stop arguing. I’m your superior. You are not to leave the Settlement without express written and verbal confirmation from Earth. From me. We have a protocol for detaining Settlers. I’m not afraid to try it out with you.”
