Saw signs for it in a pharmacy in Bristol on Friday.
05.10.2025 17:35 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A small sculpture representing the Virgin Mary in the act of giving birth, viewed side on. She is sitting leaning backwards on her arms, on a blue bed, naked from the waist down, with her legs apart, and is wearing a red dress pulled up above her bump. She is gazing up in agony with her hair loose and a delicate gold halo.
My fab art history seminar group spent today's session designing and pitching an exhibition on iconoclasm for an imaginary job interview to be a gallery curator. I love that one group selected this sculpture by Esther Strauร to be their exhibition's finale:

02.10.2025 07:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Hotel or Airbnb? I would want an Airbnb on Fitzwilliam Square or close to Merrion Square. Donโt stay in Temple Bar, but aim for the National Art Gallery as your โas close as possible to hereโ point.
02.10.2025 07:45 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Gave a paper at the Bristol Classics Seminar yesterday on Arthur Evans & skulls. Great fun to share the Dark Truths (TM) with a brand new audience. Got to stop miming Charles Hawes being lowered down into a TOWER OF SKULLS to see how many he can grab like a claw machine (it was 26 - he was pleased).

Big thank you from this young classicist (doing GCSE Latin AND Greek!) who fell asleep reading your book last night after a great evening. Her favourite part was the vase. ๐บ

Photograph of John Evans 1893 pamphlet "The Forgery of Antiquities" with a handwritten note on the top reading "Arthur John Evans, with his fathers love"
Late night library find: a pamphlet written by the archaeologist John Evans with a note on the front cover that appears to be in his hand, dedicating it to his son, Arthur Evans (of Knossos fame).
Any experts on Evan's handwriting out there?
It's a fun read - I'm doing my PhD on Evans, btw (in Bristol, but live in Oxford). Happy to chat whenever!
