🔬The research team, led by Irene López, together with Núria Borràs and Víctor Vallès Nebot, developed this technology in a collaboration through our IMEM-BRT and R2EM groups, together with the company XD Solutions, combining expertise in materials science, biomaterials, and environmental management.
🏗️The first pilot plant has been installed at the @upc.edu Campus Nord sports center, where BEEC’s potential for large-scale greywater treatment is being tested. This project was possible thanks to an award from the Barcelona City Council for innovative water-saving solutions in sports environments.
🧪 BEEC is created by combining natural mineral materials, producing a composite that allows ion exchange and wastewater filtration. This technology can treat water from showers in sports facilities, making it safe to reuse for non-potable purposes, reducing overall water consumption 💦.
💧 Turning Greywater into a Resource!
Our researchers are leading the way in sustainable water management with the development of BEEC – BioEngineering Eco-Composite, a novel material that enables the filtration and reuse of greywater ♻️.
A program in collaboration with Fundació Catalunya la Pedrera as part of the Bojos per la Ciència initiative (Bojos per la Ciència).

🎓 Triple celebration for @upc.edu! Alongside Maria Pau, Sergi Abadal & Jezabel Curbelo received the National Young Researchers Awards. 👏 #ScienceHeroes #Innovation #Research
The National Research Award Leonardo Torres Quevedo is Spain’s top recognition in Engineering, celebrating research with global impact that advances science and humanity.
💡 This achievement inspires us to keep pushing boundaries in science and innovation!
🎉 Proud moment at our center!
Our Scientific Director and Group Leader of the BBT group, Maria Pau Ginebra, has won the National Research Award Leonardo Torres Quevedo 🏅 for her pioneering work in biomedical engineering and biomaterials for bone regeneration. 👏
In animal studies, these scaffolds were progressively replaced by newly formed bone, a breakthrough that could pave the way for custom, mechanically tunable implants adapted to each patient’s needs.

✨ Our team has developed a 3D printed bone scaffold that:
✔️ Is strong and flexible during surgery, making it easier for surgeons to handle.
✔️ Self-hardens after implantation, reaching bone-like strength.
✔️ Promotes natural bone regeneration while reducing inflammation.
💡 Imagine a bone implant that is flexible during surgery – easy to handle, adapt, and fix – and then hardens naturally once inside the body to provide strong, bone-like support.
That’s what researchers from the BBT group have achieved in a new study published in #AdvancedFunctionalMaterials.
