AL West Primer: Athletics The A's have an exciting young core of hitters. But is there enough pitching on hand to compete for a postseason berth?

Good morning!

The A’s should be a fun team to watch. But can they contend in 2026?

I can't pretend we do *news* in any real way, our approach is more magazine-y as things go, but we're independent and our owners are former writers who put everything back into the company. we talk about anything and everything baseball, and do it with both rigor and whimsy. we'd love to have you:

Let's talk about Spring Training stats Numbers don't lie. But stats produced during Cactus League and Grapefruit League action are Fool's Gold.

A reminder now that the #Mariners are a few days into Cactus League play.

Also...compared to other catchers, Mitch Garver was an above average run producer vs left-handed pitching in 2025. #Mariners

Some fans will hate the #Mariners bringing back Mitch Garver on a minor-league deal. But...

Whether Garver or Cal Raleigh was catching in 2025, the M's staff experienced similar outcomes in areas a pitcher/catcher tandem can influence: walks, strikeouts, quality of contact.

Highest wOBA for hitters during innings 7-9 under the following conditions since 2022*.

+ Go-ahead run at plate
+ Go-ahead run on base
+ Tying run at plate
+ Tying run on base

*200 PA min

Again, some folks may be surprised by where Julio Rodríguez ranks.

Cole Young played 77 games with the #Mariners and produced a .211/.302/.305 slash line with a 80 wRC+.

But…

Young was superb for a 50-game span sandwiched between a slow start/cold ending to his rookie campaign.

Jun 7 - Aug 15
.281/.369/.399

I love you...thank you My first attempt at expressing my love for Carrie prompted an unexpected and now-funny response from her.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Sixteen years ago today, I said "I love you" to Mrs. A for the first time. I'm re-sharing the story surrounding this momentous event since it still makes me chuckle.

Mariners add established bat to infield mix Seattle finally gets Brendan Donovan. A seemingly ideal addition for a club intent on reaching the World Series and promoting prospects from within in 2026.

Good morning!

Brendan Donovan is an ideal pickup for a #Mariners team intent on reaching the World Series in 2026 and simultaneously promoting from within.

“I would say similar to where we ended the year, as a starting point.” - JeDi addressing 2026 payroll last October

He’s on track to be correct. #Mariners spending continues to be mid-pack compared to the rest of MLB.

C’mon, Nathan! Josh Naylor will save the day. He’ll repeat his 138 OPS+ with the Mariners and 1.015 OPS at T-Mobile Park.

Right?

Not an original idea. Forgot the originator. (I’m sorry!). But it’s a fun nugget, so I’m sharing it.

Most NFL receiving yds after hitting age-40. There are 66 players with zero yds between Mercedes Lewis and Brett Favre.

Jerry Rice’s final 362 yds were with the #Seahawks.

Carrie the Seahawks fan You may have heard about Carrie's love for the Mariners. But she possessed a similar passion for the Seahawks, too.

I’m resharing my tribute to Mrs A’s #Seahawks fandom from last year. We actually have more things in common than what divides us.

How will the Mariners approach the offseason? Promises of adequate financial resources for the front office have been made and broken before. Will this offseason be different?

This piece written right after the ALCS is worth revisiting, IMO.

Yes, there’s still time for the #Mariners to make meaningful acquisitions. But to date, the team’s splashiest move has been re-signing one of its own free agents.

Nico Hoerner and the Mariners? A hitter with great on-base ability, who is also a disruptor on the bases and a top-shelf defender? Sign me up.

Thoughts on how Nico Hoerner could help the #Mariners.

I know, that’s a picture of Ian Happ.
