“As dozens of frog species have declined, scientists have witnessed a remarkable chain of events: With fewer tadpoles to eat mosquito larvae, rates of mosquito-borne malaria in the region have climbed, resulting in a fivefold increase in cases.”

Sooo do we think the NDP will learn anything about how to stand for and rally the working class in 2025 from Mamdani?
Today I’m thinking of the two 70-year-old lifelong social democrats from NYC I met on a BC beach, who asked me 200 questions about Canadian systems, and told me how much people have always hated Trump in NYC. They were here looking for hope — think they’ve probably found it now.
Guys, I need to upgrade my Mac for “work purposes” (playing Baldur’s Gate). What’s the latest? I loathe the weight of a Pro and travel a lot — should I just max out Air storage?
American: “Where are you from?”
Me: “Canada… grew up near Toronto but now in BC, on the west coast.”
American: “Oh nice. You’re not Canadian though, right?”
Me: “… yes? I’m from Canada?”
American: “Oh. You sound American.”
Le sigh 🫠
I don’t feel particularly sympathetic broadly speaking (generations being fed megalomaniac nationalism has its predictable consequences) but there’s an almost pleading desperation and grief in folks I’ve never seen before, and I do feel sad for them.
Currently travelling in Europe and the shame levels from Americans are at an all time high, as are the profuse apologies from other nationalities for mistaking me as an American.
For me, he belongs in the upper echelon of childhood Canadiana – right alongside Mr. Dress-Up. Funny how two American-born creatives with a love for children found their values matched in 60s/70s Canada, made their homes here, and ended up shaping generations of kids like me.
Robert Munsch was the author of half of my childhood book collection. He once visited my elementary school to read to us, and years later, when I was studying English at the University of Guelph, I lived just down the road from him. I’d catch myself looking for him in his window, reading.
I’m just going to put this out into the universe that if the NDP wants to survive they need to go call Matthew Green and beg him to run for leadership.
I was a caregiver for a period of time for two relatives both diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. A “juicing cures cancer” scheme came for them — I was able to intervene. Low health literacy + desperate for a miracle, they were prime targets. It’s happening everywhere and a story that needs to be told.
It's almost like the solution is government-funded journalism?? Would they prefer to fund public journalism and pay for civic + political literacy, or erode it to the point that democratic institutions themselves become threatened? It would be an act of self-preservation (points south).
I believe we need to invest in quality journalism as a society. But I question the logic of restricting important public news from reputable sources to only those who already understand its value and can afford to pay, leaving the rest to get information from internet rage-farms.
The human rights framework which protects refugees via international law was largely influenced by Catholics post-WWII. As an ex-Catholic I’ve got a lot of gripes, but it’s nice to see they haven’t forgotten this one.
Porter is flying Vancouver
<—> Hamilton this summer, spread the word
I’m at the Hamilton airport drinking Dark Horse coffee, a barista said I had beautiful eyes, the security agent replied “peachy keen jelly bean” to me, there were no lines anywhere, and I’m about to get shortbread cookies on Porter.
I am never stepping foot in Pearson again!!!
Gary! Look where I was this past weekend 🥹
I asked my neighbour’s 13 year old daughter to watch my dog for a few days and suggested she come by tomorrow to chat. Then I got this email from her.
We love a business woman!!!!
Stop touching grass for a second I've got something to shitpost
I’d compare this to what it’s normally like in middle of June — and what normally brings people up this far isn’t even accessible yet. RIP to me eating at local restaurants this year it’s going to be a banger.
Anecdotal reporting from my little tourism outpost town in BC — based on the obvious influx of tourists in April before the popular tourist alpine hikes are even accessible tells me it’s going to be a VERY BUSY SUMMER. I’m actually a little scared.
I am allergic to eggs so I never know how to gauge what is allowed when it comes to egg culture. All of it = unappealing🥲
It's hard to slice in 2025. Social media can certainly turn elections. Debates have become fodder. How effectively? Not sure – but I do think there's a degree of influence in the "second wave" if capitalized on. I submit: "I am incredibly proud to be Pierre Elliot Trudeau's son" from 10 yrs ago.
PB on a spoon and a piece of bread is probably closer (once you start combining things or use an appliance, it gets dicey). Might need to send that in for arbitration.
girl dinner™ has many applications!
Hi Chris! ~15 years in nonprofit comms, I typically don’t use newswires, but pitching Canadian Press journalists on their beat is a great way to access national media. 1-1 relationships work best + need to have an overarching strategy. Happy to have an informal chat about this sometime!
granola girl summer
Got my son an MMR booster 1.5 years ahead of schedule this morning because of measles outbreaks in Canada. Last week, we learned that Pertussis is currently spreading throughout my community. Is Diphtheria next?
I...worked on this story for a year...and...they just...they just group-chatted it out.
Yes, it’s open and they have turned it into an early childhood dream. Check their schedule before you go but it’s worth a little visit these days!
