Of course, the discussion on the orange site is bonkers, this comment summarizes it:

The idea that there's a significant lobby on fucking Hacker News unhappy that a startup IPO'd for a zillion bucks and made everyone rich is twilight zone shit.

Figma IPO'ing for 3x the Adobe offer is a great vindication.

I always use Grid for the top level layout of an app, and then Flexbox inside each of those elements.
04.08.2025 12:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Senate Democrats have a chance to show their voters they can effectively stymie President Donald Trump as Republicans work to advance spending bills and a flurry of nominations. But publicly and behind closed doors, the Democratic Party is grappling with whether to resist or - in Minority Whip Dick Durbin's words - seek a "quid pro quo," Jordain Carney reports. Inside Democrats' lunch Wednesday, senators talked through potential September strategies. Among the ideas they are floating is securing policy wins, like preserving soon-to-expire Affordable Care Act tax credits, or getting a commitment from Republicans not to pursue more rescissions.
Dear god these people are pathetic.

21.07.2025 15:34 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Finally here's an even longer explanation of why and how that was built:
bitworking.org/news/2019/07...
Here's a demo page of all (most?) of those elements in action:
jsdoc.skia.org/theme/theme-...
I built an entire set of base web components with that philosophy, source is here:
github.com/google/skia-...
Here's a concrete example of how I did this at my last job, with a single stylesheet: github.com/google/skia-...
21.07.2025 15:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This allows for a much more flexible application. For example, I can totally change the look of an application from a global style sheet, such as introducing "dark mode" w/o having to perform surgery on every web component to update it's hidden styles.
21.07.2025 15:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I seem to approach web components differently that what a lot of people propose. For example, I believe the HTML of the component should be viewed as part of the "surface" of the component. I.e. it should all be in the Light DOM, allowing it to be styled as part of the wider application.
21.07.2025 15:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As for web components and Shadow DOM, I have strong feelings :-)
When using WC I'm building applications and not building low-level reusable components. I don't find the CSS isolation useful, in fact, I find it gets in the way of using CSS to build an application.
OK, for a more nuanced answer, yes, I have gotten into complex layouts where I wish I had something like @scope to make the rules a little simpler to reason about.
