Swiss woman is denied entry at the US border and detained Β«You have no right to be here.Β» A teacher wanted to celebrate her birthday in New York. Instead, she was jailed in New Jersey before being deported. A lawyer warns that something similar could happen ...

This is part of the reason why I have suspended all travel to the United States indefinitely. A Swiss teacher wanted to celebrate her birthday in New York with friends but instead was detained, shackled, and sent off to a detention center in New Jersey.

No thanks!

If you are visiting the United States, having a negative view of Trump is enough to get you denied entry.
If this was coming out of Russia or China, we would deplore such an authoritarian attack on freedom of expression.

Not sure if its a feature, a bug, or just because I don't follow enough people yet but my favourite thing about this site is that occasionally you reach the end of it.

Like you have the discover tab to find out everything that's going on in the world, get annoyed and then it just runs out

I think for some people that experience of living in another country would still be really valuable. But I guess I just wanted to let people who can't do that kind of working know that there is another way of doing it. Anyway, now I'm off to do bedtime duty for the next week!

It obviously helps being based in Europe in that it's easy to travel quickly between countries and do these short visits. But I wanted to kind of let people know that there is this alternative way of doing visits that does feel like it will work 4/n

As part of PhDs and fellowships it's seen as a good thing to go on research visits. When I was writing my fellowship application I wanted to work this in but as a parent with young kids it's difficult to spend a big chunk of time abroad. So I'm trying to do more frequent short visits instead 1/n

We have an open source model (sensing a pattern here?) of risk-stratified cancer screening called MANC-RISK-SCREEN.

The code is freely available here: github.com/stuwrighthea...

We're currently working on version 1.3 adding in error in risk prediction and "chemoprevention" 11/n

We are also involved in ongoing work evaluating the cost-effectiveness of risk-stratified breast cancer screening in the UK. The principle of risk-stratified screening is that you can adapt an individual's screening intervals depending on their predicted cancer risk 10/n

(I'm off on a research visit hosted by Valesca Retèl at the Netherlands Cancer Institute next week to learn about these approaches but I'll post more about that later)

I'll also be using methods from imp sci to identify barriers to the health system providing self-sampling before condensing these barriers into implementation scenarios using a scenario drafting approach.

I'll then model the cost-effectiveness of the intervention in each scenario 8/n

In my project I'm building an open-source model of cervical cancer screening for the UK. I'll then build in the predicted uptake for different sampling approaches based on the results of a DCE fielded in a representative sample but also groups poorly served by current screening approaches 7/n
