How is it possible that we live in a world where there are more regulations for a food truck than AI?

“What if it’s a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?”

15+ years old, but still VERY relevent — and if we had acted 15 years ago, the “better world” we’d be creating would be a LOT better & easier to reach. There are real consequences we’re just starting to see to not heeding this cartoon a lot sooner.

Even worse if we don’t heed it now. #ClimateCrisis

Incredibly short-sighted and irresponsible, and completely disconnected from the real values & priorities of Vancouverites. This move would be awful not only for Vancouver, but also for all the cities that Vancouver’s leadership has inspired over decades of North American sustainability leadership.

We lack coherent policy guidance and shoot on our own goal repeatedly. It’s all connected: planning, architecture, budget, transit, housing/land use policy; we’re facing challenges and the same old same old isn’t good enough; @brenttoderian.bsky.social @toderianuw.bsky.social

The Growth Ponzi Scheme:

A city builds new infrastructure. That development brings in some quick revenue.

But the long-term cost of maintaining all that infrastructure is far greater than the revenue it generates. So when the bills come due, the city doesn’t have any money.

Photo of Costco in downtown Vancouver with residential towers above

This breaks some people’s brains.

In most cities, Costco stores fuel sprawl & car dependency.

In Vancouver, our full-sized downtown Costco has residential towers above & a skytrain station next door. LOTS of customers don’t drive to it.

We live a block from it. We call it “the convenience store.”
