A lot of our wealth goes to things that don't contribute to our well-being. Too much on transportation with poor results (notably on cars and car infrastructure) and too much on real estate because building is too hard. What we do build does not maximize well-being (towers and sfh).
Does it still take 24 hours for the amount on the card to update?
I live in Convent Glen. The only thing we got is the Fortune and Jeanne D'Arc roundabout and the Jeanne D'Arc overpass. The overpass is not great.
I have lived in Orléans most of my forty years. Active transportation plans have come and gone with very little actual improvements actually implemented. I don't trust the city to build what is needed to support this development, especially with our tendency to elect austerity mayors.
Just to clarify, I would love it if St-Joseph and Place D'Orléans would be made bikeable, Centrum was pedestrianized, and the mall parking lot made less nightmarish to walk. I just don't see it happening any time soon so the criticism is valid.
I have walked and biked from the LRT or my place in Orléans. A lot of investment would need to be made in order to make it a place that is not completely car dependent for most people. Take the same development and plop it in the mall parking lot and its a different conversation.
The most insidious thing about car dependency is what it does to us. The more dependent on cars they make us, the more WE’LL fight to defend that dependency from ANY change that would allow other CHOICES in how to get around, because we’re so dependent that we can’t picture ANYONE choosing them.
The MUP on Jeanne D'Arc in Orléans is the safest way to cross the 174. It is not maintained this winter and has five conflict points with cars. It also dumps you in a parking lot or a roundabout on a four lane road.
I cleared the drain near my house and then cars were going really fast as I was playing outside with my kids. I regretted my altruism.
Municipal taxes are probably the investment with the best ROI a household can make. Especially if it leads to good enough alternatives to cars that households can ditch a vehicle. For a few hundred dollars a year, a household can save thousands in car expenses.
A lot of people are buying cars because of the unreliable transit and RTO which the mayor encouraged. I think those people would prefer a tax increase.
Someone should design sidewalks that don't turn into a swimming pool as soon as it gets a bit warm in winter.
My third and final rink stop today was in Convent Glen - Orleans Wood where I just was able to catch Cllr. Laura Dudas cutting the ribbon on their new boards! Some great conversation and hot chocolate with residents.
I miss having a throttle when riding in deeper snow. Being able to accelerate while focused on stabilizing the bike instead of pedaling allows for easier starts. It is also good for maneuvering at very slow speeds. I would include a throttle that gets you up to a certain speed (5-10kph) on pedelecs.
There are collisions and random traffic. I find my LRT commute to be pretty consistent (bike to transitway stop, transfer at Blair). I have had a 15 minute delay once in the last three months. I am not convinced that the LRT is less reliable than driving.
I wish we had a table comparing the LRT to the 417. Is there more variance driving from Blair to Tunney's vs taking the LRT? I don't know the answer.
Both @jleiper.bsky.social and I are fighting for a budget that puts people first, a budget that delivers reliable transit, safe communities and a city where everyone can afford to live and thrive.
Add your name to tell City Council that we need a budget built for people: www.arieltroster.com/budget
I delegated to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee today with a simple message: Stand up for Ottawa. 🏛️
Bill 60 is a threat to our autonomy & budget. #ottawa #ottbike #bill60
Bill 60 kneecaps municipal Councils and councillors seeking to make our streets safer as we intensify, and will worsen congestion for everyone. Thanks to residents who came to City Hall this morning to protest.
#bill60

🧵 There’s been some attention on the City’s new “donation button”. It’s an idea we talked about last year and that we were supposed to get a report on before proceeding. Maybe I missed it...
But here we are. And I have thoughts.
One scenario where a public option for groceries could make sense is in food deserts. Encouraging the creation of a coop could help address the problem in the short to medium run, until there is enough growth to sustain competition.
@misernyc.bsky.social has another example to support his law.
We heard from many groups today about the Tewin development. This is unfortunately going to be a development that further entrenches us into unsustainable sprawl.
Property taxes have not and will not be able to provide long-term support for these types of developments. We have decades of evidence.
Residential streets not designed for a vehicle of that size. They should be driving much slower than the speed limit and have spotters when blind spots could be an issue. The scenarios where there's no negligence or fault in the driver or company are limited.

Three newly published books argue that cars are destroying society as well as the planet.
Is the world finally ready to rein in the automobile?
My essay, in @bloomberg.com (gift link below)
I’m inclined to agree: spending taxpayer money on Lansdowne 2.0 hardly seems like the most pragmatic option, considering so many higher-priority needs like transit, infrastructure upgrades, road and sidewalk maintenance, pedestrian safety upgrades, the list goes on…
