The "/outsiders" is even more wild. It's one thing to say that academics studying a religion academically shouldn't make value judgements, quite another to say that activists, pundits, journalists and other outsiders should all refuse to engage with that question. Absolutely ludicrous.

If the forthcoming peace plan does not involve lifting Palestinians out of poverty, treating them as equals, and granting them self-determination, it will eventually break, no matter how much physical force accompanies it. This is true no matter how justified you think Israel's actions are.

Anyone who is serious about bringing lasting peace to the region needs to understand this. Even if we accept for the sake of argument that the entire population of Palestine is ontologically evil and deserves nothing, there is a 100% chance that giving them nothing leads to more war.

Because of this fact, I am pessimistic about any long-term peace being forged in the near future. I don't think Israel will ever agree to the concessions that would be necessary for most Palestinians to prosper and perceive that justice has been done. As long as they don't, they'll keep resisting.

Any lasting peace between Israel and Palestine would have to come with fair and humane living conditions for the Palestinian people.

This is not a high-minded ideal. This is a pragmatic reality. Peace will not last unless it's good enough for the Palestinians that they freely choose to accept it.
