This is why I adore more "elegant" strategy roguelikes like Slice & Dice, Shogun Showdown and Shotgun King, because they keep their numeric upgrade scaling very tame and limit the range of new mechanics introduced during runs.
Their run-length is also shorter on average, which also helps the issue.

When I get to the late game in these games, I feel like I can't really get a complete mental model how the game's mechanics are working together. This has at worst lead to accidental defeat due to not being able to estimate how much block my character will generate at the end of a turn.

Notable "offenders" in this are games like Slay the Spire and Die in the Dungeon which meta strategies involve getting as many relics (upgrades) as possible as fast as possible in hopes of snowballing power and synergies in preparation for the late game.

I think an interesting problem in rogue like strategy game design is mechanic complexity creep.

In some games as runs progress, the player gets copious amounts of upgrades that interact in intricate ways that become increasingly difficult to understand intuitively with human heuristics/cognition.

Creating assets with a ps1 style while never having played the ps1 is kinda absurd, but I love the look so much.

I've tried several ways to emphasize tiles without looking too sci-fi

Yesterday it occurred to me I could create a shape between a circle and a hex by taking a weighted average of their signed distance functions

These ones are 70% hex, 30% circle, 100% ๐ŸคŒ

I must admit, the flip side of this is that the MAG TTRG provides solid frameworks for enabling players to easily tell the type stories the designers intended with minimal effort. I think the "D&D-like" paradigm is also very accessible as most new players have had previous experience with D&D.

I've been reading the #MagnusArchives TTRPG as of late, and I love how the audio drama has been adapted faithfully to a new format, but I dislike the "D&D-like" design paradigm of having complicated rules and numeric progression levels for everything.

Anyone else play UB Funkeys in the late 2000s / early 2010s?

YouTube been feeding me old songs from its OST as of late which got me waxing nostalgic and putting the pieces to together on why I love futuristic y2k aesthetics

It doesn't help that I played it on my mom's bloated Windows Vista laptop.
