In the book, it's slow. They take women's bank accounts, require male co-signers like spouse ("security "), no credit cards. The women are all fired (layoffs, gotta cut costs). Passports are revoked. Hidden testing for fertility. Too on point with current events for comfort.

I read the book as a teen, and the process struck me even then. The gradual, subtle stripping of the ability for women to resist, combined with the normalizing of misogyny. 1984, HT, and Animal Farm are my reference books now.
