Like some kind of grim Omen of things to come, #Hawaii ’s #Kilauea volcano just unleashed a MASSIVE WING SHAPED eruption with lava fountains soaring 1,500+ feet high

Oil is the most Lovecraftian thing that actually exists. You're telling me that there's a black ichor under the earth, made from the ancient dead, whose burning can realize all the dreams of man but only at the price of slowly returning the earth to its primordial state?

Imagine choosing to model scenarios that implicitly assume a) terraforming-scale carbon capture and permanent sequestration is technically, politically and economically feasible, while e.g. b) shifting from car-dependent sprawl to denser cities with good public and active transit is impossible.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

Thick black line is the centerline of the Beni River in Bolivia. Circles that are tangent to the centerline represent the radius of curvature ag the location. Smaller circles = higher curvatures.

In this version the circles are colored according to the curvature; brighter colors = higher curvatures.

I have been experimenting with different ways of visualizing the curvature of meandering rivers. Plotting curvature in the context of the meanders themselves helps QC-ing the curvature data βš’οΈπŸ§ͺ

This is a danger i'm willing to ignore. 😜 I do indeed plan the route(s) in advance and follow the navigator. Unless something super interesting pops up nearby.

Please also share your rides for us to enjoy!

Thanks, and I totally agree! This time the route was also a real sightseeing trip. I should design the routes around great sights more often.

The final 60km home was pretty tough. No wonder: 4,5km ascent and ~120km gravel roads over a total of 370km. I didn't quite break the 400km threshold I was aiming for, but considering everything I'm more than satisfied. There's always the next time! πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜…

To finish this thread off: I had the next break at 312km visiting my friend's summer cabin. The whole trip started to grow on me and the final kms were pretty slow. But it was worth it.

The nights shift is done and what an adventure it was! Abandoned mines, creepy forests, moose, elk, bats, fox, Finland's most beautiful tree and forbidden places (🀑) to name a few things. 219/4xxkm.

a picture of a book text. The text says "Suetonius adds that, according to some reports, he said in Greek 'Kai su, teknon' (which Shakespeare turned into the Latin 'Et tu, Brute'. It literally means 'You too, child', but what Caesar may have intended by the words isnt clear. Tempest cites 'an important article' by James Russell (1980) 'that has often been overlooked'. Russel points out that the words kai su often appear on curse tablets, and suggest that Caesar's putative last words were not 'the emotional parting declaration of a betrayed man to one he had treated like a son' but more along the lines of 'See you in hell, punk'.
