I did end up subbing to cgcookie, and as I suspected it was really nice to follow a semi-structured course platform. Having to scour youtube for tutorials that may or may not be good was a big point of friction for me.

I'll guess I should start posting some of the stuff I've been doing sometime...

I know #blender has a huge amount of youtube content available, but there is so much, and as a beginner it's hard to gauge merit when you don't know anything. I am internally debating paying for a structured course, one of the popular ones like CGBoost or CGCookie. I just don't knowwwww 😔

Oh no, I should be doing more basic stuff like practicing hard surface modeling or something, but I have been sucked down the rabbit hole of procedural materials.

It pleases the programming brain.

I keep giving LLMs a chance to impress me, whenever I encounter a boring task that they should be good at, and they keep shitting the bed. Not like 'this was too hard a problem for fancy autocomplete' shitting the bed, like 'randomly deleting swathes of code' shitting the bed

My "Introduction to #ATProto" blog post that I've been working on for some time is ready 🙂 It goes through things like records, lexicons, DIDs, then PDS/AppView etc. and how it all works together. Let me know if anything is wrong!

More parts later, with the Fedi comparisons & misconceptions etc.

This book was my introduction to Le Guin, and it remains near the top of my all-time favorite sci-fi. Even among her other works it still takes the crown for me.

Zelda recipe appears in serious novel by serious author after rushed Google search Always check your sources

And it bares re-iterating that he is so lazy a writer, so uncaring in his own craft, he included a recipe for red dye from a Zelda game in his totes serious historical fiction book.

The man is so bad a writer he was practically ChatGPT before ChatGPT existed

I tire of using note-taking apps for some reason. Obsidian is nice but I have this feeling that its just...too much. I just want to write markdown notes in vim/nvim. All I need is some simple note management features...which I realized could all be done with a fairly simple bash script... off I go!

This largely mirrors my own experience. There are so many things that "just work" for me that don't in other distros. If something doesn't, the solution is usually a few more lines max in the config, then once you fix it, it stays working forever unless the package itself makes a breaking change.

Yeah, self-hosting is cool and people advocate to do it for digital freedom reasons, which is good, but they never mention that it can very quickly cost a LOT of money, time, space to do it yourself at home. It would be nice if digital freedom were available to more than just well-off suburbanites.

another really cool command that no one told me:

nix store optimise

It freed an additional 75GB of space from my nix store... I make sure to run it after every major update

No Squish! Only Pixels!

I've only seen pixel art rigged in a more traditional(?) Live2D style. The I saw Mini Sunny on YT and had to try it for myself.

It was definitely... a process figuring out to get things to move.

ALT: An angled-down image of a snake in a loose coil, head facing left and resting on the body. From neck to tail, the ground color is a darkm deep red, and the tip of each scale is tipped in black, forming a small triangular shape. The neck is a creamy yellow, also with black-tipped scales, and the head is mostly a dark orange, with a splotch of dark red on the scales between the eyes. The iris is the same dark, deep red, with a round black pupil.

My quest to revive my old laptop from university made excellent progress. Decided on a minimal install of Void Linux with IceWM. Install and setup was as smooth as could be. After some customization of IceWM, I finally enjoy using this laptop again. Very happy with Void.

I think they really could do it and succeed this time. IMO they were too early the first time, the software support/ecosystem wasn't as mature as it is now. With SteamOS being this solid I see no reason why they should't.

Or at least I foresee third-parties making small boxes with SteamOS on them.
