When Science Becomes the Enemy From funding cuts to violence: How mRNA became ground zero in the war on expertise

This piece is an extraordinary deep dive into mRNA vaccine technology, why it is critical, and the damage caused by RFK Jr. torpedoing funding for it.

Incredible work by @funsizeimmuninja.bsky.social and Dr. Jess Steier.

mRNA is indeed, as the authors say, a molecule of hope.

Well this is bad. Google is indexing ChatGPT conversations exposing sensitive user data

I tried a few quick searches. I found someone's chat where I can see their api key

I found some building their resume. Their name, email and phone numbers are exposed.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

Study finds no evidence aluminum salts in vaccines are tied to higher risk of asthma, other childhood diseases A new large study from Denmark finds no evidence that aluminum salts used in vaccines are tied to a higher risk of childhood diseases.

Science refutes another antivax claim.

Study of the medical records of >1.2M Danish children over a 24yr period finds no evid. that exposure to aluminum in vaccines led to a statistically sig. increase in a child’s risk of developing any of a wide variety of conditions, including asthma & autism.πŸ›ŸπŸ˜·

Can anyone recommend a service where I upload 3D models of simple machine parts and they mail me the CNC'ed results? Something like Osh Park that does small batches but for machine parts?

I feel like I saw something about this recently but can't remember which platform I saw it on.

β€˜Half the tree of life’: ecologists’ horror as nature reserves are emptied of insects A new point in history has been reached, entomologists say, as climate-led species’ collapse moves up the food chain even in supposedly protected regions free of pesticides

PSA: around 5-8% of the population has a color vision impairment for red/green.

Many talks at #2025ICDB still use red-green LUTs on slides that are not accessible to everyone.

Changing to more accessible colors is doable and easy.

We can do better.
