Graphical abstract: In this study, we aimed to estimate the number of nuisance bears based on damage and occurrence reports collected from 2009 to 2023 in the Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido. For the estimation, we assessed the harmfulness level (from Condition 0 to 3) of the bears based on the details of the reports and developed a method to remove double or more overcounts of a bear derived from multiple reports on the same single bear. Estimating the number of nuisance individuals involved in conflict by setting a specific criterion provides a more valuable evaluation indicator for adaptive management than simply using the number of occurrences alone.

Graphical Abstract: This study examines how habitat types, functional traits, and diets influence the presence and coexistence of raptor and owl species in southern India. By combining species traits, spatial data, and diet patterns, it highlights the ecological factors shaping their communities across different landscapes.

Graphical Abstract: The mathematical approach of balancing removes distortion due to population structure for transient population analysis, but some distortion is the result of true biological processes. Using a large dataset of matrix population models from plants and animals, we demonstrate that balancing changes biological interpretation of demographic resilience (a transient analysis). We argue that meaningful comparisons require tailored approaches that respect the structure and context of demographic data.

Graphical abstract: We investigate the seasonal dynamics of two freshwater snails, Biomphalaria straminea and Melanoides tuberculata, in artificial reservoirs of the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite regulated hydrology, B. straminea exhibited strong seasonal fluctuations associated with dry periods, while M. tuberculata maintained stable populations throughout the year, reflecting contrasting ecological strategies. These patterns are especially relevant for understanding how native and invasive species respond to climate seasonality in human-altered freshwater environments.

This study introduces a new R package, occumb, for the convenient application of site occupancy modeling using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding data. We outline a data analysis workflow, including data setup, model fitting, model assessment, and comparison of potential study settings based on model predictions, all of which can be performed using the package. An example application targeting aquatic insects highlights the effectiveness of using biological replicates to minimize false-negative results in species detection.

This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century. The analysis of transient dynamics, which occur after environmental disturbances, helped to better understand the discrepancies between observed field growth and theoretical estimates based on population models, revealing disruptions in age structure likely due to past rat predation.
