In the end, this is what the whole pic looks like, after inking. And like back in the good old 2D cel animation days, the coloring basically takes place below the ink level (or back then, on the backside of the triacetate cel sheets). The technique hasn't changed much.

...and when I say crazy, I mean crazy. Each line has been filed and carved at, more like a sculptor making single lines look good, than an illustrator drawing a picture. Yes, this isn't economic, perhaps a little insane, but it is what I love to see, so someone's got to do it I guess. 😅

Work in progress during inking, showing a scene from a holiday motif. There are a couple anthropomorphic characters celebrating a company holiday party in a storage warehouse, which is decorated in a festive way.

It's during inking when things go a bit crazy. This is just a cutout of the full motif. Back in the day, when inking on paper with a pen, I would add to lines, remove from lines by scratching with a scalpel, until each line looks the way I want. I basically still do the same.
