The Appalachian landscape is a diverse, steadfast refuge for wildlife, but the world around it is changing. Scientists are researching how to make these woods more adaptable—and resilient—than ever.

Common Grackle, one of 125 species of birds I recorded in the Zena Woods last year. I loved watching from my studio window as these sassy birds feasted on caterpillars.

One of my favorite illustrations from the interior of ‘Atlas Obscura: Wild Life.’ This drawing opens the chapter about cities!

A snake skeleton and oval snake eggs - two full, one empty, and one with a hatchling in the process of emerging - float amongst the snakes.
