And I would I agree to that, also I would trust your experience/knowledge in the field. What I am talking is about upfront refactoring without proper knowledge as a way of accountability escaping.

but that is my problem as manager of the new team: please stop fucking around, learn and let's keep the service up and running for the customers.

example: regression in chrome causing simulcast issues due to lost sps/pps of different layers with same sps_id/pps_id. Team response: "what the fuck the code is doing with this layer switching, let's just send simulcast back to the browser with different rids"

also, my point was about the pattern of avoiding blame/accountability and always propose a n-month refactor before being able to implement a new feature or fix an issue without even trying to understand the current code/architecture/constrains/history

if you hand it over to a new (poor) team, they will not like your code and will refactor everything, even your tests.. no matter how good they are

learn-> adapt-> refactor not refactor->learn

Also it is a typical scapegoat to *not* implement new features. "I can't do this change because I need to refactor everything first", and "I can't safely refactor it because I don't like the tests neither" and then you enter into a snowball effect as customer pressure exceed your refactoring efforts

You have to own the code, but there is no need to refactor everything by default. Specially when you don't know and don't even try to understand what's going own. On the long term, everything gets refactored, even my own code.

It is very uncommon to like others people's code and it is a natural behavior to try to change it to fell more comfortable with it. But when running a live service, you have to focus on keeping it up and running with quick, safe and incremental fixes. Expecially when you lack history and context.

“Refactoring as escape” is an anti-pattern that appears when a new team takes over a running service. Instead of owning its current behavior, failures are blamed on the code, and large refactors are proposed in place of understanding root causes.
