update: ran expedition 33 under ge-proton 32 and i swear it feels like this runs *better* than on windows

the big thing im not looking forward to is trying to get VR working as best as i can get it to work, that seems like its gonna be a looooooot of effort

the winehq page for CSP 4.x has detailed instructions under the HowTo section down the page; it was fairly easy to follow and resulted in a successful setup on the first go

the only functional problem with CSP ive seen (aside from some windows in the launcher not rendering) is that exporting animations as .mp4 videos fails, likely because it's seeking a codec that it cant find in its bottled environment

gonna have to figure that one out later

i havent begun configuring and tweaking the OS for performance yet, because i need to focus on work first and foremost.

maybe later this week I'll start messing around with it and install some games to test the performance out

kinda anxious of it a bit due to having an nvidia gpu

installed CachyOS on sunday night, spent the evening setting up CSP and getting my streaming setup for work going again. CSP was a *lot* easier to install and configure than the rumors led me to believe.

i guess what matters most in this situation is which has the bigger community support, so if CachyOS has a larger support base than Nobara then I guess I'll spring for that distro instead

tomorrow i nuke windows and install linux on my daily pc, and right now I'm leaning towards installing nobara, unless someone gives me a reeeeally good reason to install cachyos instead.

you will go hundreds of snaps watching forward passes and runs and returns and whatever and never see a single lateral and then one guy will do it and its like some dormant programming is activated and everyone remembers theyre playing rugby's cousin sport and decide they wanna play that instead

the funniest phenomenon in north american sports is when an american football player desperately pitches the ball to a nearby teammate as theyre getting tackled, and suddenly everyone on the field remembers 'oh shit laterals are a thing' and the ball will get pitched like six more times on the play

right now the decision is mostly gravitating between Nobara, CachyOS, and Bazzite, with maybe a lil consideration for a few others

not a FULL solution, but they've got a page for EAC on the LVRA wiki lvra.gitlab.io/docs/vrchat/...

the VRChat devs have explicitly said they're cool with people trying to run the app on Linux and that EAC SHOULDNT go after you, but theres still occasional reports here and there

i havent have time to do more than very briefly skim it due to being busy, but it looks like it's got a lot of information about the current functional state of VR on Linux

one thing that made me step away from it back in the day was how few games either worked under something like Wine, or worked /well/

fast forward to today and ProtonDB tells me that like 95%+ of my Steam library is at /least/ Gold rated under Proton, if not Platinum or just outright native on Linux

i've been considering Mint, Pop_OS, a friend introduced me to Nobara which seems slick, I'm hearing good things bout CachyOS and hell at one point I was considering SteamOS

yeah the privacy invasion is fucking insane, i have a HUGE paranoia of information-grabbing so the direction windows has been going in for a few years now is awful

the only thing im a wee bit worried about is that Clip Studio Paint is kinda notoriously difficult to get working properly on a Linux install, but i've seen plenty of evidence that it'd doable with some elbow grease (and maybe a bottle)
