Yesterday a few dozen players lost a tournament. We must change the way we play the game.

I got a bit sidetracked, let me reiterate what is the main point of my rant:

The way the community functions inevitably gives louder voices to a minority who is very good at the game, and I believe that we are underestimating the impact that this has on the health of the game itself.

If you can learn transferable skills and it doesn't create bad habits, why not go for it?

Wait, you know what? As long as you know that you are developing bad habits you can still choose to go for it.

We shouldn't ignore the opinion of top-level players, it's extremely valuable and insightful. But we tend to forget that there's a long way from the bottom to the top, and as long as you know that a certain weapon or strategy won't work at a higher level, why not use it for as long as it's viable?

Oh and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that we should have low-level tier lists. I'm just saying that listening to top-level players rank the weapons that work at their level is absurd.

Once you know enough for that, I'd argue that you are not low-level anymore. Even if a low-level player feels confident enough to make a tier list, they usually don't have the followers to have an impact.

Why are all tier lists about weapons at top-level? My team can handle some of the top weapons much easier than lower ones. You know why? Because the most popular tier lists are made by people who know the game enough to make tier lists.

Tier lists. Seriously. Sploosh is a fucking menace at low-level if you haven't developed enough awareness yet. Brush? Brushes have singlehandedly made my whole team tilt more than once. Hydra is a mistake that should be decompiled.

By the way the video is great and you should go watch it, I'm talking about it because it's just a perfect example of the point I'm trying to make and it reflects what I believe to be the delusion in the community.

Is the mentality that will make the top-level teams win against JP the same one that will make Splatoon comp more enjoyable for the majority of players? I'm not equipped to answer that question, but it concerns me that it's not being asked.

Maybe people find LUTI divisions more fun than X Rank power. Personally I do, since the division is assigned to my team instead of me as a player. I like the team-oriented approach in the west.

I was watching the latest video from Ezio about the skill gap between JP and the west, and I'm like... Who are they talking to? The absolute vast majority of players won't ever participate in a top-level tournament against JP players. Why is it a community issue that we must close that gap?

So you end up with a shitton of low-level players listening to a few top-level players who live in a different reality and are just talking into an echo chamber.

I feel like the Splatoon community underestimates the disconnection between top-level and low-level.
People gain followers and fame as they get better at the game, so popular Splatoon content is extremely biased towards top-level.
