The study highlighted innovative practices ranging from short-term bridging programmes to longer-term support, within and outside mainstream educational spaces.

It explored young learners’ experiences of access to and quality of education and the perspective of young refugees and those who support their educational journeys in each city.

It was a place-based research study that focused on existing education provisions in two English cities – Oxford and Nottingham.

A Sustainable Place for Inclusive Refugee Education (Aspire) focused on refugee education, by utilising a participatory methodology led by learners with asylum-seeking and refugee backgrounds.

Today we welcome to Nottingham students studying six-week pre-sessional English for academic purposes courses, our last cohorts for this academic year.

It's always a busy summer in #UoNSoE, helping our international students prepare for their degree courses starting in September.

A university careers consultant also gave career-related tips and advice, and provided one-to-one consultation sessions with our current students who wanted support and guidance in career and employability.

By connecting with the alumni further along in their professional journeys in different fields, our MA students were encouraged to explore opportunities, reflect on their goals, and make the most of their time remaining at Nottingham.

A recent careers event at #UoNSoE brought together current MA students, and alumni from a diverse range of courses, who generously offered their insights and guidance, sharing practical tips and useful resources.

Art of Belonging Social integration of young refugees through arts-based practices and cultural place-making

The Art of Belonging project explores ways in which the impact of social isolation experienced by newly arrived forced migrants could be lessened. It was based on the premise that participation in the arts can enhance place-making and encourage social belonging.

The regional collaboration taking place in Nottingham offers a promising foundation to co-create a Schools of Belonging agenda rooted in local knowledge and national advocacy and a set of key recommendations was produced to take this forward.

The event opened with reflections from Professor Jo McIntyre, drawing on her long-standing research, The Art of Belonging, which focusses on refugee education and the concept of belonging.

#UoNSoE recently hosted a roundtable event involving nearly 40 representatives from schools, local council and organisations, refugee education including those with lived experiences and pupils from Welbeck Primary School to discuss the importance of belonging in education.
