This election, I’m voting for Gaza. But please don’t call me a single-issue voter I would argue a politician’s stance on Gaza says volumes about their commitment to a range of domestic issues, and not just upholding international law.

In my first time writing for the @thestar.com, I shared why Gaza is the best lens to help Canadians decide which parties and candidates deserve our votes this Monday.

Home March 20, 2025 Dear Presidents, Chancellors, and Boards of Trustees of the 60 Universities that received a March 10th warning letter from the U.S. Department of Education: You are on the frontlines ...

“Failing to act now will establish a dangerous precedent of capitulation. If universities do not stand together now, they will stand alone—and one by one, they will fall.
The path forward requires considerable courage—shared courage. Leadership must stand together to ensure our institutions endure.”

"It is difficult not to see the cuts as an attempt to re-orient these universities away from their critical focus...It is even harder not to see York’s program admission suspensions as political choices in the current context of rising racism, transphobia, and hate."

“Universities are threatening to autocrats b/c we teach independent & critical thinking. (…) & because we teach students to be skeptical of authority, especially our own authority. If anyone thinks that we can brainwash Columbia students, they’ve never met a Columbia student!” – @timfrye.bsky.social

Given that the same group that—after slashing Australian universities—slashed Laurentian, slashed Queens, and slashed York is now slashing at McGill...going to again suggest those who care about higher ed in Canada read this really important piece.

"The York administration’s recent spending decisions further demonstrate that the program suspensions are political choices, not financial necessities." @caut.bsky.social @ocufa.bsky.social

Wrote this piece on the significance of the York cuts:

'In a democratic society a university is not a “business” that sells degrees. It can serve as a bulwark against disinformation and against manipulation of the population by powerful interests.' @ocufa.bsky.social @caut.bsky.social
