If I have any credibility with you from 20 years of reporting on rightwing & fascist movements, please listen when I beg you not to celebrate Charlie Kirk getting shot. Leave aside morality: this isn’t a match in dry grass, it’s a torch. We do not want what this could ignite & we would not win.

It is only barely hyperbolic to say NIMBYism and the downstream effects of making affordable housing inaccessible are why Democrats have lost so much ground.

reposted this today because the inverse is also true:

if you can't stand up for trans people when it matters, no one should, or will, ever trust you when the bullseye moves to the next target.

There are also a ton of mom/parenting groups that use Facebook. Add in buy nothing groups and marketplace it can become pretty essential. That's what a monopoly combined with enshittification gives you, a service that sucks but you can't avoid.

Instead of regurgitating the bromide that LLMs are just "autocomplete on steroids" (even by people who know better), maybe we can actually engage in some public education. The problem with genAI is better expressed through a classic computer science concept, known as SYMBOL GROUNDING. 🧡

really feels like housing affordability is one of the most important political issues of our time, affecting nearly every aspect of our lives, and everyday our mainstream political discourse is about whether sour cream is woke or not

Moving back a little here: this is when things became extremely chaotic. In the first minute alone there were several overhead batons, several people wearing press passes batonned, hit, shoved. Multiple journalists had to go to the hospital after this scrum (1)

As someone who used to work at a non-profit, discourse around non-profit salaries drives me absolutely nuts. There are people making six-figure salaries? You mean white collar employees who work full time are coming close to being fairly compensated for their work?

In the meantime, formal entries into the CFPB’s consumer complaints database have soared, suggesting that the business of junk fees, predatory terms, and routine swindles is booming just as loudly as the Prospect has been predicting it would since Elon Musk memorably typed out β€œCFPB RIP” on X. All told, 2.5 million complaints have flooded into the CFPB over the past six months, roughly a quarter of the total complaints the agency has recorded since its inception in 2011, with reports of everything from being shut out of bank accounts after a hurricane to scammers impersonating ICE officials who convince consumers to buy them gift cards in order to help them avoid deportation.

By the way scammers have taken notice.
