And Luther became a poster-boy for everyone from the Nazis to civil rights leaders in the US - think of Martin Luther King Jr. It's hard to think of a more extraordinary set of legacies from the act on this day 508 years ago. 4/4

It also resulted in higher literacy rates in northern Europe that had impacts that could be measured 400 years ater; it also affected the nature and extent of Ottoman expansion into Central Europe 3/4

That sparked a chain reaction that included the Reformation; political upheaval that included millions of deaths in religious wars in Europe; and the splintering of the Church 2/4

It's 31 October. Most people will be thinking about Halloween. Historians, of course, will be thinking about Martin Luther, who nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenberg on this day in 1517. 1/4
