So yeah the date of my PhD defense was confirmed around a week ago, it's set about a month from now, and none of the people who knew told me. Because they all assumed someone else would do it.

Most of the time I'm not consciously viewing myself as disabled and then sometimes I remember that they literally did diagnose me with a disability severe enough to need accommodations when I was 10 and just sort of... didn't.

The ridiculous paranoia around the idea that computers were Cheating Machines for Giga Cheaters and the only reason to want to use one was to be a Big Evil Cheater directly impacted my education in every subject that asked for more than brief, single-sentence answers to questions.

Like of course my grades were better when I got to write on a laptop... Because I wasn't racing the clock simply to WRITE THE ANSWERS in time, and could afford to structure and edit my answers instead of simply having to write continuously for the full test time while trying to avoid hurting my hand

As someone whose hands had the "handwriting cursed to be shit forever" disease in school and needed to write on a laptop as a disability accommodation that was routinely neglected by schools because nobody fucking told me I had that right, I get pretty annoyed about the 'RETVRN to handwriting' push.

It's not like I'm getting ambushed or anything, I've got plenty of prep time. However. It's scary that this was just offhandedly mentioned in an email under the assumption that I already knew. It could easily have been a lot later.
