Be the scientist who provides thoughtful and critical feedback to strengthen an idea without changing the idea completely. We need creative minds, not clones of thought. Mentors who foster creativity can have an enormous impact on the scientific enterprise: self-awareness is key β™₯️ πŸ”‘

Early detection can make a huge difference in patient outcomes. If you’re not sure if you should be screened, check in with your primary care provider and ask. For me, this only required a quick phone visit wi tbh them to get a referral. The procedure took 15 minutes… well worth it to know β™₯️

βœ… I had my first screening mammogram performed today: with a familial history of breast cancer spanning generations and most of my maternal aunts, it was time to check in. Happy to report that it was easy to schedule after getting a referral from my PCP, painless, and fast.

#NewPI achievement unlocked: first manuscript rejection 🫠☒️🫠🩸🫠

Bart is disappointed that we weren’t invited to resubmit, but at least we made it to review and got some useful feedback. Gotta keep it moving…

With everything being such a mess lately, I’m thankful to have a team that is passionate about science, yet sensitive to the strains I am feeling. Thank you, Termini lab, for giving me space and being patient. I’m thankful I still get to make discoveries with you everyday β™₯️🩸

Please consider making a donation to Fred Hutch Cancer Center in memory of my auntie. I am honored that her family wanted all funds to go directly to my lab πŸ₯Ί 🧫

I couldn’t be prouder to be your niece. We are working hard on that cure every day - I love you, Auntie Yo β™₯️

In 2023, my auntie visited our lab at Fred Hutch, where she got to share her journey with the lab, witness the research in progress, and meet the bright scientists behind the discoveries. This was a very special moment I hold near and dear to my heart.

Eventually, she achieved remission and was living life to the fullest. She served as a strong advocate for cancer research, participating in and leading several fundraising events and sharing her experiences openly. Sadly, her cancer eventually returned and had spread.

My auntie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 after a routine screening mammogram. After a bilateral mastectomy, she underwent an intense cancer treatment regimen, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy.

My auntie fought breast cancer hard, but recently passed away.

She would always ask, β€œHave you found a cure yet?” to which I would say, β€œWe’re working on it!”. And we are still working on it.

Learn about her journey or donate to her cancer research fund:

Programs are disappearing left and right. We need to be intentional about continuing to provide the support those programs afforded ourselves or risk losing exceptional scientists who deserve to be here.

When nominating speakers to give talks, be intentional about including scientists from disadvantaged backgrounds. Know a trainee from a disadvantaged background giving a talk? Can yoi help them prepare their talk? Send an email to offer!!

Can you offer to read proposals that scientists from disadvantaged backgrounds are working on to provide additional feedback or guidance? If so, let them know!! Send an email to say you’re available to help in any capacity.

We as a scientific community need to be more intentional than ever in supporting, mentoring, and being available to help scientists from disadvantaged backgrounds. I urge everyone to think deeply about what they can do. For example…

As a person who directly benefitted from many of the programs being dismantled (F31 Diversity, diverse postdoc seminar series, cluster hire, etc), it hits so hard every time I see one of these programs go away. I am gutted.

I’m learning to immense value of self-preservation for persisting in this job. If I acted on or even just reacted to every single thing I felt outrage about, I’d have an empty tank. This is a really hard part of the job, but essential.

It’s just one of those days where I feel like a total loser and like I don’t belong here (in academia, in science, in a leadership position). I keep showing up, though, because I know I actually do deserve to be here. It’s just hard… 😩 πŸ₯Έ

Potential NIH funding cuts could affect local cancer research
YouTube video by KING 5 Seattle Potential NIH funding cuts could affect local cancer research

We were delighted to have @king5news.com.web.brid.gy visit us in the Termini Lab to discuss how NIH funding cuts could affect cancer research:

We NEED indirect costs to provide funding needed complete research studies that will lead to life saving discoveries.
