New publication! My report in @hepi-news.bsky.social looks at racial equity in UK higher education, and finds that even in TEF Gold institutions there are large awarding gaps and serious underrpresentation of Global Majority staff #HigherEducation #Equity www.hepi.ac.uk/reports/maki...

Plants use cell-surface and intracellular receptors that collaborate to detect pathogens🦠. We discovered that a key #ubiquitin recognition event recruits both receptor types into an unexpected dual receptor complex that boost the translation of defence proteins and establishes robust #PlantImmunity👇🏾

Congrats to @robertoskar.bsky.social for passing his PhD viva last Friday, investigating the role of mobile signals in ‘vaccinating’ plants against diseases!!🥳🎊🥳 Many thanks to examiners @jurriaanton.bsky.social and @drannisr.bsky.social !!
Congrats to @tamatar.bsky.social for passing her PhD viva with flying colours, studying the role of diverse ubiquitin topologies in plant immunity!!🥳🎊🥳 Many thanks to examiners @djgibbs.bsky.social and Lucas Frungillo!
We were delighted to welcome Steven Spoel @spoel-lab.bsky.social to Cologne. Thanks to the @sfb1403.bsky.social for supporting his invitation. We learned a lot about ubiquitin chains and their role in plant immunity 🤯.
Very excited to announce that our collaborative manifesto for 🌱 #PlantScience #Education has now been published! Educators from >10 countries and 30 institutions have contributed to it and we are incredibly proud of the final output. Here is a short thread 🧵1/4 doi.org/10.1002/ppp3...
1/2 This manifesto is the result of a collaborative effort started earlier this year at the Plant Biology Education conference in Lancaster, UK.
We are delighted to see it out and we are proud that our Comms team contributed to such an important resource for the community! 🌱

In Arabidopsis it only really works in certain immune mutants such as efr1 or npr1, but that probably doesn’t help your complementation study!?!
We are advertising a PhD project investigating a cellular mechanism that ensures protein quality control during mRNA translation in plants. Please get in touch on here or via email if you are interested and I can provide further details!

How does immunisation establish durable disease resistance in plants?
Mobile immune signals released upon immunisation boost effectiveness of the defence hormone salicylic acid by ten times!😲 This results in higher immune gene expression and systemic acquired resistance against infection.
Pseudomonas syringae secretes the iminosugar glycosyrin to block plant immune recognition. It mimics galactose to inhibit β-galactosidase, disrupt flagellin sensing, and rewire host glycobiology!
