Messier 4 is the nearest globular cluster, being 2.2kpc or about 7,175 light years away. It is very prominent with the slightest optical aid, and is located just 1.3 degrees west of Antares in Scorpius. Messier 4 would be one of the most splendid globulars in the sky if it were not obscured by heavy clouds of dark interstellar matter. Interstellar absorption also reddens the color of the light from the cluster. However it displays an angular diameter of more than that of the Full Moon, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 75 light years. It is also one of the least concentrated globular clusters. The central core is much less dense than in many other globulars, such as 47 Tucanae. Although hidden from our direct view, the massive cluster lies 25,000 light-years away and is the densest known gathering of young stars in our galaxy. The illustration is based on infrared observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and with ground-based telescopes, which pierced our galaxy's dusty core and snapped images of the luminous cluster of about 2,000 stars. Some of the brightest blue stars in this illustration are among the most massive stars astronomers found with the Hubble telescope, weighing about 130 times more than our Sun. The bright reddish object at upper right is the center of our galaxy, residing 100 light-years away from the Arches cluster. The image on the right is a representation of what it would look like if you could see past Titan's atmosphere and down to its surface. The darker areas are vast hydrocarbon sand dunes and seas. Up north, some of Titan's largest lakes and seas (Kraken Mare, Punga Mare and Jingpo Lacus) are visible. Down below, the Fensal-Aztlan region can be seen. Both images were taken by Cassini's camera system, the Imaging Science Subsystem on January 26, 2014, as it was looking for clouds across Titan's northern sub-Saturn hemisphere.
