And I don’t mean trans people’s genetics. I mean it is 100% possible for the doctor to say “it’s a girl,” for you to grow up happily as a normal little girl, become a woman, and then because of medical tests or sports testing, discover you have XY chromosomes. It isn’t common, but it still exists.

Even in humans, the XX and XY you learned about in high school aren’t the only options. They’re just the most common. There’s also X, XXY, XYY, not to mention normal, healthy natal women walking around with XY chromosomes and men with XX.

The only aspect of biological sex that humans can’t easily change is our genotype, and that’s why transphobes pretend genes are the gold standard for biological sex.

But most biologists don’t use genotype to determine an animal’s sex because: GENOTYPE IS NOT AN ACCURATE PREDICTOR OF SEX.

Genital surgery changes another part of that phenotype, and it works well in humans b/c human genitals all develop from the same basic structures in the womb—a penis is basically an enlarged clitoris, a scrotum is basically extended labia. Evolution’s a cheap bastard and hates inventing anything new

Trans people do the same, just to a larger extent. Most human secondary sex characteristics develop because of hormones; change the hormones and you start to change the sec characteristics; you start changing their phenotypical sex.

There are other elements as well, like your genetics (your genotype) and how you interact with other members of your species.

Humans can modify their phenotype very easily. Cis people do it all the time for gender-related reasons. Women get breast augmentations. Men take testosterone supplements…

Assuming you’re asking in good faith, biologists have a lot of things that factor into defining “biological sex.” The biggest factor is physical traits (your phenotype), like genitalia, secondary sex characteristics, biochemistry and in other animals, size and color…
