FIRE Letter to Gallaudet University, September 26, 2025

Gallaudet canโ€™t compel conformity without undermining its own existing commitments to free speech.

FIRE calls on the university to rescind these restrictions and restore studentsโ€™ full expressive and associational rights.

Brotherhood and sisterhood are forced to take a backseat to bureaucracy and suppression in Greek Life at @GallaudetU.

Their new Greek Reform Guidelines impose sweeping rules that ban words like โ€œpledge,โ€ control student attire at events, and restrict who can become members.

This serves as a warning to other universities who have sought to punish faculty for similar comments: the law is not on your side.

Faculty donโ€™t lose their right to speak about matters of public interest simply because they work for a public university.

A federal court has vindicated the rights of a @USD professor who was set to be fired for social media posts about Charlie Kirkโ€™s murder.

This decision confirms what FIRE has long saidโ€”the First Amendment protects facultyโ€™s personal speech on matters of public concern.

ASUโ€™s apparent restriction does the opposite, flying in the face of the First Amendment.

FIRE demands that Angelo State University clarify whether the restriction existsโ€”and if so, scrap it immediately.

Texasโ€™s Angelo State University reportedly has an unwritten policy that bans faculty from discussing โ€œtransgender topics,โ€ using studentsโ€™ preferred names, or displaying LGBTQ flags.

As a public university, ASU must allow faculty to teach students as they see fit.

The โ€œBlack 2 School Block Partyโ€ was open to all โ€” just like Mizzouโ€™s very own Black cultural programs and courses.

Free expression for all canโ€™t mean free expression for only some. Mizzou must cut the hypocrisy and realign its commitment to the First Amendment on its campuses.

24.09.2025 14:48 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The University of Missouri doubles down on cancelling a student event for using โ€œBlackโ€ in the name, claiming students might think it was racially exclusive.

Yet Mizzou has no issue with its own Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center or Black Studies courses.

Pot, meet kettle.

FIRE will continue to call on private institutions to stand up for their rights โ€” no matter who is in office.

As we wrote to the Supreme Court back in Feb. 2024, when the government jawbones private platforms into silencing speech, it violates the First Amendment.

Google should not have waited to acknowledge it was pressured by the Biden administration to block content on its platforms.

Google condemns jawboning now, but it failed to stand up for the rights of its users when it mattered.

University of South Dakota-Memorandum in Support of Motion for Temporary Restraining Order

The First Amendment protects public university faculty when they speak as citizens on matters of public concern. Faculty donโ€™t lose their rights simply because politicians demand it.

Carrโ€™s threats to ABC are jawboning any way you slice it ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel hours after FCC Chair Brendan Carr suggested they could face consequences for remarks Kimmel made in the aftermath of Charlie Kirkโ€™s murder.

FIREโ€™s Bob Corn-Revere for @PostOpinions: FCC Chair Brendan Carr nakedly abused government power to pressure ABC into removing Jimmy Kimmel from the air for his speech. In America, the government doesnโ€™t get to play network executive and determine who and what you watch.

WEBINAR: U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi says hate speech isnโ€™t free speechโ€”but the Supreme Court has declared otherwise.

Join FIRE as we unpack Bondiโ€™s remarks, explain what the law actually says, and respond to the latest free speech news from the past week.

President Trump suggested today that media outlets are engaging in โ€œhate speechโ€ by being โ€œunfairโ€ to him and โ€œmaybeโ€ should be prosecuted.

Trumpโ€™s statement demonstrates the inherent danger of โ€œhate speechโ€ laws: Those in power will always weaponize them to silence dissent.

16.09.2025 15:36 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 14    ๐Ÿ” 5    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 5    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

The attorney general would be wise to read the words of the Supreme Court, which has repeatedly held that the "proudest boast" of America's free speech tradition is "freedom for the thought that we hate."

There is no hate speech exception to the First Amendment. Nevertheless, the attorney general says "there's free speech, and then there's hate speech," and the government will "target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech."

We are in the cancel culture part of the tragedy cycle Cancel culture ends when we decide that people can be horrifically wrong and still entitled to the grace that enables us all to grow from our worst moments.

After Charlie Kirkโ€™s murder, the cancel culture machine has kicked into gear, with mob mentality driving firings, investigations, and political pressure.

FIRE's Adam Goldstein looks at how tragedy affects our culture of free speech. โฌ‡๏ธ

Student acceptance of violence in response to speech hits a record high Over the past 5 years, it's gone up almost 80%

What was once a marginal opinion is becoming normalized.

Violence has never been and will never be free speech. It threatens the entire foundation of democracy.

This isnโ€™t a left or a right problem. Itโ€™s an American problem.

The rise is happening across ideological lines. No one is immune.

Students on the left were long the most accepting of violence, but now support has grown everywhere. Acceptance among students on the right and Independents has doubled or tripled, even surpassing the left.
