Companies like PLS want to undo protections for sacred sites across Turtle Island to “drill baby drill” but we’re ready and organized.
👉 Call the Forest Service at (605) 343-1567 to demand they rescind the Categorical Exclusion (CE) permit.
In 2014, 4 tribes raised $9M to purchase back Pe’sla & worked with the federal gov to get the central prayer site & a 2-mile buffer zone into federal trust. This was to recognize the religious and cultural significance of the area and therefore protect it from harmful mining activity like PLS.

This morning, February 27th, 2026, the Black Hills National Forest issued a permit to drill for graphite at sacred site Pe’sla — despite community outcry to stop the project.

The federal government understood the connection between Indigenous Tribes and the buffalo. Colonists, traders, & military leaders understood the life-giving connection insofar as they used it against Indigenous peoples.

While he was there he offered these words “We don’t need no pipeline, we need lifelines.” Those words remain true today as we continue to fight climate, civil, & economic injustice.

In 2023, NDN Holdings purchased the land and began working with the Native Conservancy to transfer ownership. NDN helped Native Conservancy incubate the ECLT formation so the land would stay with the Eyak people and be protected for many generations to come.
