Companies like PLS want to undo protections for sacred sites across Turtle Island to “drill baby drill” but we’re ready and organized.

In 2014, 4 tribes raised $9M to purchase back Pe’sla & worked with the federal gov to get the central prayer site & a 2-mile buffer zone into federal trust. This was to recognize the religious and cultural significance of the area and therefore protect it from harmful mining activity like PLS.

This morning, February 27th, 2026, the Black Hills National Forest issued a permit to drill for graphite at sacred site Pe’sla — despite community outcry to stop the project.
“Prior to European contact, there were 30 to 60 million buffalo roaming from Oregon to New Jersey, the Arctic circle to Mexico. By the time settlers were through using buffalo for target practice, nearly all had been killed.”
“Today, 25% of Indigenous peoples do not have regular access to food. This reality is largely set by policy decisions of the past, including those that separated Indigenous peoples from their historical food source of buffalo...”
“Kill every buffalo you can. Every buffalo dead is an Indian gone.”
The federal government understood the connection between Indigenous Tribes and the buffalo. Colonists, traders, & military leaders understood the life-giving connection insofar as they used it against Indigenous peoples.
