A gut sense for a microbial pattern regulates feeding - Nature
A study reveals a gutβbrain sensory pathway through which the microbial component flagellin activates neuropod cells in the colon to signal the brain and reduce feeding in mice.
New research reveals that the gut can sense microbial flagellin via TLR5-expressing neuropod cells, triggering PYY release & reducing feeding through a gutβbrain neural circuitβindependent of microbiota or immune cues.

Excited to share my first senior author paper in Pain! π We identify Synaptojanin 1 & Endophilin A1 as key endocytic mediators of nociception. Silencing them blocks spinal synaptic transmission and relieves pain in cancer & postoperative models, without affecting normal behavior.

NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.
How bad will it be? Catastrophic.
Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.
But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.
Speak up now before it is too late.

Aging and injury drive neuronal senescence in the dorsal root ganglia - Nature Neuroscience
The authors describe a susceptibility of the peripheral nervous system to neuronal senescence with age or injury relevant for sensory dysfunction, such as chronic pain.
New study! Aging and nerve injury cause senescent neurons in the peripheral nervous system, driving increased pain; targeting these cells could offer a new pain treatment especially in older adults.

Estimates of Illicit Opioid Use in the US
This cross-sectional survey study estimates the prevalence of illicit opioid use, including illicitly manufactured fentanyl, and initial opioid exposure among those reporting illicit opioid use.
New study reveals alarmingly high rates of illicit opioid and fentanyl use in the US, much higher than prior estimates, underscores the urgent need for better data to fight the opioid crisis. #OpioidCrisis #Fentanyl #PublicHealth jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...
